need advice to add fringe to scarf without fraying

hi,

as an intro, i've been crocheting for several years, but i'm not very good at it honestly...i just love it. i only make scarves and such. well, i have just learned a new stitch and am making a wool scarf (broomstick lace scarf) and i'd like to add fringe to the scarf... the only problem is this yarn frays when cut (which makes the fringe pointless obviously). any advice on how to stop this, other than tying a knot? TIA

I make fringe on my scarves by looping lengths of yarn, usually in groups of 3 or 4 through the bottom and top edge. Sort of like this. I've never done a fringe by cutting, that will of course make crochet or knitting unravel. It is, however, a great way to make fringe on woven fabric.

thank you. yes, i make fringe this way as well. my scarf isn't unraveling, but the bottom of the fringe is fraying. i've never crocheted with wool like this before, so the problem hasn't occurred previously -- when i cut my 6 1/2 inch pieces for fringe they are beginning to fray terribly before i even put them on the scarf, ykwim?

i guess i will just put knots at the end or something to keep it from fraying...maybe i just won't add fringe... which stinks though because it would add a lot. thanks for taking the time to respond though. i do appreciate it

OK, I wasn't quite understanding what you were talking about.

What about doing a chain loop fringe? Starting at the corner, crochet a chain several inches long (twice the length of your fringe) then join it to the edge of your scarf with a sls next stitch. Keep doing that across the edge so you have a fringe of long loops. Or you can chain out to the length you want your fringe then sls back up the chain.

thank you! that is a good idea. i finished the wool scarf already. i just put knots at the end (it looks okay). but i plan to make more scarves as gifts...so i will try your tip for sure! i'm SO proud of myself for making a scarf using another stitch other than the double crochet!! lol. i was so inspired afterward, last night i even bought knitting needles and plan to learn that now!! here's a picture of the scarf. thanks again for your help!

That looks so pretty! I can see how the yarn would fray a lot though. Congrats on stepping outside your box
