how much bleeding is too much?

Most likely I'm having a prolonged miscarriage, but I have been bleeding since Christmas eve night. Can I hear from you mommies who have bled significantly in pregnancies before that turned out okay?

The ER doc refused me a D&C because she couldn't be sure the fetus was not viable. That's cool, but I can't imagine a fetus being okay after my bleeding. I had spotting followed by bright red blood with long, dark red strands of mucosy-blood. I passed two or three gelatanous blood clots (pea-sized). I had heavy cramping day 2-4 but now have light to mild cramping or no cramping. I don't soak any pads in an hour, but have to change liners every few hours. I can see strands of dark blood in the toilet after going. Sometimes I don't see much at all.

My hcg on Monday was 3800 - estimated at 4-5weeks along. U/S showed fetal pole, faint fetus, egg yolk, gestational sac low in the uterus - no heartbeat. Wednesday hcg was 3020, same results in u/s as before. I am wondering if this is vanishing twin or not. Any answers about bleeding and what can still be viable after 8 days of this?

It could be a miscarriage or it could be a vanishing twin--either would account for the HCG drop. Your experience does not sound like my miscarriage at all--I had very, very light spotting for two days, followed by moderate spotting on a third day and then intense bleeding with a perceptible expulsion of the yolk sac on the fourth day, but I was also further along. Maybe someone else will have more useful advice for you. Good luck.

thanks, I'm trying to find out more about hcg levels and the vanishing twin. Your response was really helpful. Sorry for your loss and good luck on your pregnancy!
