extra teeth? **update post#9**

My son, 6, was in the middle of a major meltdown this morning when I noticed (as he was in FULL scream) that he had an extra tooth behind one of his bottom front teeth. He has sensory issues esp. oral ones and has been telling me for awhile that one of his teeth was loose...but I don't think he fully realized what was going on. Has anyone here btdt w/extra teeth? Is it necessary to have extras removed? How is that usually accomplished?

Thanks for any input!

My dd has an extra tooth it is the 3rd tooth over. If it is just baby teeth then it is left alone but if it comes in with the permanent teeth like dd's did then it needs to come out because of crowding and bite issues.

The dentist will pull the one that is the best looking and in the best spot. dd's will be done with just nitrus and the numbing shot. With your ds's issues you may have to find a dentist who can do in office sedation with meds rather than go that route.

Braces are in dd's future because of the extra tooth pushing her bottom teeth way over to the side.

Thanks so much for your input! I'm a little unsure about whether my son's extra tooth is primary or secondary. He hasn't lost any primary teeth yet and I'm pretty sure I would have noticed an extra tooth being present when he was a baby. In fact I brush his teeth every day as he has trouble w/gagging when he brushes his teeth and I'm surprised that I've only just noticed the extra tooth, I mean it looks like it's fully in. Maybe extra teeth come in overnight?!

Anyway, I think you're right, we're going to end up having to do sedation.

Thanks again for your help!

It kinda depends on what kind of tooth it is. For example I had an extra tooth that was "behind" my permanant teeth that the dentist removed because well I had 2 perm. teeth in one spot and it was causing crowding and could eventually cause problems other than aesthics. So I had it removed. DS had something similar so I kinda freaked but the dentist said in his case it was his perm. tooth that was behind his baby tooth and in time it would come out which it did but we did take a watch and see approach since it had no pain because if it didnt he did suggest having it pulled ot preserve the alignment of his teeth.

it sounds like your son's permanent tooth came in & just hasn't lost the baby tooth yet. It's quite common. Once the baby tooth comes out, the permanent one will move into it's proper place.

Hmmm...I didn't know this was possible?! It would make sense but I'm not sure how exactly the permanent tooth will move into place...it just seems to be a distance from the baby tooth it would be replacing...I mean, my understanding is that the permanent tooth pushes the baby tooth out...how will the baby tooth ever become loose w/out another tooth pushing it? Sorry if this is a REALLY silly ? but teeth are not my strong point

It is unusual that the perm. dosnt push out the baby but it is possible. It is one of the reasons why when my kids teeth become loose enough to pull I pull them out myself to prevent that type of thing from happening.

I pull the baby tooth with either string or with my fingers and a washcloth. Yes there is a bit of upset for the child involved but it only lasts until the tooth is out then they are all giggles and smiles.

My brother has an extra tooth in front of his teeth, but when he grow up we go to his dentist and the doctor fixed his teeth in normal.
Maybe your son are only shucked about what he discover about his tooth.
but the most important there you must go to the dentist of your son to consult the situation and what they can help about the problem of your son.
In that way you can solve your problem about his tooth.

And you're the winner Carrie!

A couple of days ago my son came to me w/a small white object in his hand and asked me what it was....he had lost his first tooth (YAY!!!) and it just so happened that it was the tooth in front of the permanent tooth that seemed to have come from nowhere! What I'm not sure about is whether it can actually move to be where it's supposed to be or whether some alignment (braces etc) will be required later?!

Anyway...thanks for everyone's input

Odds are it will move into position given time. Glad it was that and not a true extra tooth.

It will move. My son has had 4 permanent teeth come in behind the baby teeth. It's a good idea to keep checking to see if your son gets that again and then really encourage him to get the baby teeth out because the permanent ones can get decayed since you can't brush them.

When it happened with my son, the dentist told him he'd have to come back in 3 weeks and get the baby teeth pulled if he didn't get them out. I offered to give him $5 if he could pull them out (cheaper than a dentist appt!) and that really encouraged him to get them out.
