I like faux meats.

It's not that I miss meat, really I don't. However, I love condiments . I love ketchup, but not on french fries. I love sauerkraut and relish. I adore BBQ sauce. Before Morningstar Farms came along (I've been doing this a long time) I tried BBQ sauce on everything, but really it needs faux meat; either chik'nuggets or gluten "ribs" from The Farm Cookbook work well.

Also, there really are things that are a bit better with something salty and fatty. I like a lettuce and tomato sandwich well enough, but add a little facon and you've got a "real" BLT (or should I call it a FLT .)

I know that many are very anti faux meats, but I wonder if there are other closet faux meat lovers out there. I'll make this an anonymous poll so you can all fess up.

I love the stuff too! One weakness is the 'soysage' from gimme lean and the quorn nuggets for mock chix masala. BBQ sauce & setain make fantasic sandwiches. Fakin also makes a great rueben with lots of sauerkraut.

I've made homemade seitan on rare (mostly special) occasions, so I know exactly what's in it. My husband eats 'Field Roast' veggie sausages, the ingredients don't really look all that bad. Otherwise we're pretty fake meat free.

I like it occasionally, and mostly make my own at home, tempeh bacon, steamed seitan sausages and seitan mock ribs. But once in a while, I just want a stinkin' hot dog.

We love Field Roast stuff. Yummy. I can do it myself, but my time is very limited so I like the convenience.

Peace,

Jo

I said other..we only eat them if SOMEONE ELSE makes them for us..ie-family bbq, or if were out and grab a veggie burger somewhere...

I couldn't tell you the last time we brought fake meat into the house... so happy ds is off his veggie dog binge

Im going to say 4 times a year we eat a veggie burger?

See, that's why when I do the homemade, I make big batches and freeze them. I'll make 4 dozen lentil-mushroom-oat patties or seitan sausages and wrap them up in single-dinner containers to freeze. It doesn't take much longer to make more of them, and then I get the heat and eat convenience of store-bought with the economy and quality of homemade.

Another big condiment lover too. I love having stuff I can accessorize with our large condiment collection. We don't always keep fake meats in the house though, and probably get something like 1x/month if we pick something up.

I'll admit I was so glad to see fake bratwurst when that came out. So satisfying. . .

I used them sparingly, about once every week or 2. My MIL, however, uses them pretty much every time she makes something for us or DS. I really like smart ground for tacos and pasta sauce, and the occasional Lite-Life turkey deli slices for sandwhiches.

I never used to use them, except veggie burgers when I was traveling, but I married a carnivore who is trying to go veggie. In blending our diets, we are experimenting a bit with faux meats, but I prefer not to use soy products except for long fermented ones like tempeh and miso.

Quorn makes pretty good faux meats with mushrooms, but they are more expensive than the soy ones. Also, I heard that a lot of faux meats have msg in them.

I'd like to potentially learn more about making my own. Anyone have any favorite recepies or cookbooks to share?

I haven't tried any myself (yet!), but the blog Vegan Dad has a bunch of faux mean recipes. There are lots of tags and his search function works well, if you just want to poke around. =)

I don't dig very many faux's. In fact, most things make me a bit ill, having been veg*an for 23 years. But, my dear friend turned me on to field roast apple sage sausages and I love them. I only allow myself to have them on the meal plan twice a month! LOL

I've never been a bit seitan fan, but have been experimenting with home recipes. I'm digging it actually, as a way to cut down on the amount os soy we eat.

So home made for me with a tiny exception!

We love the ones that use whole food type ingredients (Field Roast, Tofurkey) and try to really limit the ones that contain soy protein isolates. My DH is wheat sensitive though, so it's mostly just me and DS who enjoy them. We do enjoy Quorn on occasion, though I find it VERY expensive!

I try to avoid eating too much soy but I LOVE the Tofurky Chipotle Hot Dogs and the Morning Star BBQ Riblets. Yves makes pretty good sausage patties and I will sometimes use the boca or morningstar crumbles to make sloppy joes.

DS2 eats tofu dogs and chik'n nuggets. Ds1 has tried a variety of fake meat and dislikes most. He will eat the above ones and veggie burgers on occasion.

Their father and I both hate fake(and real) meat. I do have a great recipe for BBQ tofu but it is a pita to make and has peanut butter in it so we eat it rarely.

i used to eat hot dogs JUST for the condiments... now, when I feel the urge i make carrot dogs. Sounds gross I know, but does it for me. par-steam the carrots first, then throw on grill (or skip if not grilling anything else)... when they are soft but not mushy they are done. Make as you would anything else.. i slather mine with ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, etc... never even miss the hotdog. I've also tried wrapping the above with lettuce instead of a bun - and while NOT a hotdog, was also very tasty.

Now that made me hungry. I know what I am trying!

We do fake meats pretty regularly at home.... probably 2 times a week or so. I like them and since DH still eats omnivore outside of our home, he doesn't feel like he is missing out at home if I get Tofurkey sausage and whatnot.
