Ha!  I wanted to show you all what pure craziness is happening on my head at a few days shy of 9 months dready.  Look how short, short that one is and how long, long that other is, lol!  I have several now that are short like that, and all the ones on the top of my head are super dready and still pretty long, although they shrunk about half their length (they were just longer 'cause my hair was cut straight across the bottom before I dreaded up).  This super long one is on the layer right above the layer on my neckline, so it should be shorter.  It's funny to watch what happens--it's like a soap opera (not that I watch those!).  One day two dreads are cool hanging out w/each other and trying to congo and the next day one of them is trying to congo w/another...Then the next day one is changed completely and doesn't look like itself anymore.  Btw, I cannot believe how red my hair looks.  I can't get rid of the red, lol.  Oh well, I think I've decided to stop trying anyway and wear my silvers proudly.  ;o)  You just can't see them in this pic.

I love the pics! It's great to see what mine might turn into...i'm almost 2 mo only, but they seem to be holding well (finally!) and starting to loop. I just hate the frizzies and have quite a few strays, my worst, though is those little baby hairs on my forehead, would a crochet hook help? I've tried, w/no avail, but I also have no idea how!

So I'm wondering what the best thing to put in my hair is. I've been in bandanas for weeks now and it's old. I want to knit something, a tam, a headband, what? Also wanting a wrap but wonder if I can use something I have?

I'm thinking it is not a good idea to wrap a loop (like with embroidery thread or something)?

What would happen?

What would happen is you'd have a wrapped loop. The wrapping would compress it all together, and eventually, if you leave the wrap in long enough it will smooth the loops all into the dread somehow. you just have to be careful to get all the loop into the wrap; no "sticky-outey" bits

<----- veteran of many years of wrapped dreads.

I actually have some wraps that have been in my hair 5+ years!

I love wrapping my really wonky loops and I use embroidery floss.  I leave them in at least a month or two and then remove.  I have some in now that's been there for longer than that and I'm not sure I'll ever remove them.

how do all you lovely ladies get beads to stay in your hair? do you have to wait until they are really locked up nicely? I tried putting a few beads in, but they've all fallen out. I am wondering if it is because my dreads are still tightening or because there's some magic trick to beautiful beads that i don't know about

I would choose a bead that looks like it's a tad too small and then you really work it on so it's very tight. another option is to sew a loop of thread in place to keep it in.

I tend to squish my beads onto loops.  I look for a snug fit... never had on fall out.

you can also put the bead on two small dreads

putting a bead on two small dreads can make the dreads lock together - which is a good thing if that's what you want, but otherwise, don't leave the bead on too long, take it off and rip to separate regularly.

thanks for the advice on wrapping loops!  So after a few months or so I can just cut the floss?  I was thinking if I wrapped it could end up a permanent part of the lock.  :)

I just cut out a year old wool wrap, was a lot easier than I thought it would be...

Embroidery floss (cotton) shouldn't felt into your hair.  I know folk who have had them for years and removed them easily if that is what you want to do.

The first dread I wrapped was wrapped in hemp.  That was hard to get out after about 6 wks.  Embroidery floss comes right out.  LOVE IT!  I'm going to have a friend dye some of my dreads in one of her colorways (she dyes wool yarn), and maybe felt another couple w/wool in another colorway.  I think it'll look great.

I use a child's plastic beading needle to add my beads.  I stretch the eye of the needle out so I can get the wispy end of my dread in.  Then I'll string on the bead, and usually opt to put them over a loop.  Then I move the bead down the loop week by week until the loops are less wonky.  When my dreads were way newer, I would put in a bead and then rip and twist to keep it in better.

they're looking amazing sharlla! thanks for the update.

also: I've taken wraps out of my dreads after *years* - embroidery floss or acrylic yarn comes out no problems, natural fibres are more likely to felt in.

Hi all,

Just started my dreads this weekend after two previously abandoned attempts, but been lurking here for awhile.  Pregnant now too, and looking forward to watching dreads and baby #4 grow together. We live in a really conservative small town in the Canadian prairies, and hubby is a pastor, so I'm looking forward to shaking things up a bit around here :)

Someone asked about dread wraps to make from what she already had around.... I just made one out of batik fabric in less than a minute by sewing a rectangle of fabric together into a tube that fits my head. A sleeve of an old oversized t-shirt is another approach, or just a big fat strip off the entire bottom of an old tshirt works if you leave it as a loop and wrap it twice around your head.

Hope that helps.

Anno

they were selling these at the mall, wonder if these would be a good option http://hothairwraps.com/hairwraps/album/

Sharlla, what are those made of? They look super fun!  Could even do something w/those curly shoe laces, I bet!  Or pipe cleaners, lol.  I personally have been eyeing a particular couple of awesome feathers on one of my really handsome Oriental roosters.  They are over a foot long and really skinny.....One of my kids made a little dream catcher w/some of our guinea feathers on it.  Trying to figure out how to wear that...

Welcome Anno!  I like to use tshirt bottoms like you said, wrapped twice.  And I had forgotten about the tshirt sleeves.  I just made a bunch of reusable grocery bags out of tshirts, and have lots of sleeves!  I'd been using them as napkins, rofl.
