What are the hidden form of dairy?

I think my babe is having dairy issues ...either that or chocolate or coffee, but since dairy is the most common one I'm going to eliminate it first and see if that helps.

So, what are the hidden forms I should be looking for? Casein, whey, what else that's not obvious?

Also, would evap milk be ok since it's been cooked?

Both of my boys are allergic, so we have to avoid everything on the list.

Evaporated milk is definitely dairy.

I found this site very helpful when I went through this with DS1. Read through about the first 4-6 posts I think, there's a lot of info. Some stuff I thought would be fine, like vegan cheese, is not, it often has casein in it. Other things I'd think wouldn't be are, such as Trader Joe's "oreos" and also TJ's (and other health food) pop tarts. Good luck, with DS1 the problem foods were milk and egg, fyi.

of course the obvous, no yogurt, cheese, store bought bread *check labels* processed foods like "pasta roni etc" a lot of soups contain milk in some form. hot dogs, some lunch meats, breading on chicken nuggets a lot of times contain milk, butter, if it says milk, whey, lactose stay away from it. Freel free to pm me, my daughter is allergic, so I'm pretty good at knowing what foods contain what kwim. We've been doing this for, well, 2.5 yrs. It's hard at first, but will become a way of life. Heck, I've learned that rice milk tastes so much better than dairy anyway

Oh wow thanks soo so much ladies!

I have so much to read- I had no idea how many hidden forms there were!

Should I cut out eggs too? Are the two protein allergies linked?

Eggs aren't linked, but soy and milk protein are often linked - so you may want to cut out all soy sources as well. They tend to be just as tricky as milk - hidden everywhere! I think the cross-reactivity is about 50-60%, so if cutting out all milk sources doesn't work, adding soy may be a good idea.

I think my son had a hard time b/c I ate eggs ALL the time, especially after cutting out dairy. In our case, soy was fine but I didn't eat it often, mainly toffutti cuties (like ice cream sandwiches) lol. I think soy (or egg, in my case) ends up being a problem if you overdo it in replacing dairy. You can do rice, almond, hemp or oat milk (even make your own, google the recipes)instead of soy milk.

If I were you, I'd completely eliminate dairy first for 7-10 days then test it if you are still uncertain by drinking milk or whatever. If it's improved greatly but not 100% you can continue it for 4 weeks, then try cutting out soy first then eggs if there are still problems. I have to tell you, I about drove myself nuts with my son trying to pinpoint it, the eggs were a lot milder a problem than the dairy and we didn't figure it out til he was 8 mo. old (2mo. old for dairy). I hope you figue out what the problem food group is! what symptoms are you dealing with? by the way, a good sourdough is usually dairy free, mine from a local baking company has sourdough starter, flour salt and oil in it

Thanks for the tips. I'm not totally into eggs really, but i do love them occasionally for breakfast or in salads.

The main issues are gas, obvious pain cries, comfort sucking which leads to vomitting, and facial rash/acne(?). Also, his stool pattern has dramatically changed recently as well, going from pooping once every day or two (consistency of tomatoe paste) to now pooping 6 or so times per day (water consistency).

My DD has I guess what you would call a sensitivity to dairy, not a full blown allergy.
Her symptoms also were huge amounts of gas and the facial rash that was awful!

Anyway, I eliminated things with a lot of milk, like rice pudding and cheese and wow, rash is gone. She has a little gas but nothing unusual. I don't really eat dairy or drink milk except for cheese, ( I miss pizza), and it never occurred to me to eliminate foods that has just a little dairy. I guess I would have if her symptoms didn't improve.

She has no issues with soy cheese or soy milk in my cereal or tofu.

Anyway, maybe you could try cutting out the obvious things and see if she gets better and then you wouldn't have to worry about the rest.
