Need quick Reglan advice for sister

The hospital wants to give my sister Reglan to help stimulate her milk production. She had a rough labor and ended with a c section. Her baby was born 12/30. I told her it could take a few more days before her milk comes in, keep nursing, etc, etc.

Any advice, pros/cons, on Reglan. Thanks so much!

STAY AWAY! Seriously. I took it for a few weeks and had bad depression and anxiety. I started it 2.5 weeks after having DD and hadn't been having problems before. I couldn't answer the phone, I'd bawl if anyone looked at me, freaked out trying to make a grocery list. I quit and was back to normal within a couple days. I researched it afterwards and that's a very very common problem, especially in pp women.

I started domperidone and it has worked great for me, but it will take a week or two to get it (have to order from overseas, it's illegal here). I'd actually advise nursing around the clock and supplementing with formula until she can get some dom over taking Reglan.

It has only been 3-4 days though. Give it another day.

The hospital is insane.....your sisters milk should come in soon...there is no reason for them to push Reglan on her now!

I have been/am working my ass off to get my milk supply back up after a severe case of mastitis on day 9 post birth (check my other posts for the insane story)--- it's now day 23, and we are able to supplement only with breast milk, and most of his food he is getting directy from my breasts...

I say this because even I, with all the major issues, would not consider Reglan because of the side effects. I did order some Dom, but its not hear yet...hopefully I will barely need it when it shows up

So, its waaaaaaaaaaay too early for them to be pushing that stuff on your sister!!!! Her body is healing from the rough labor and section--and is probably just a little shower with getting her transition from col. to milk....but certainly NOT abnormal at this point!!!

Good luck to her! I am sure it will all work out quite well....with a little time...

I have taken reglan to reinduce lactation but also because of some other medical issues and needed it, which also started me lactating again. I had no side effects what so ever.

With that said, I would nurse like crazy, pump and even use a SNS while trying to nurse with either donated breast milk or formula before I used any drugs.

I would also use a dropper with formula not a bottle and get the baby to nurse as much as possible too.

Thank you so much ladies.

My sister decided against it. Another lactation consultant came in and railed against the side effects, then reassured her that her milk would come in. Sanity prevailed.

Great news....again, Reglan can be very helpful to many moms (not all get side effects of course) for a varierty of reasons--as phrogger points out-- but in your sisters case...it's way to soon for anyone to be suggesting this to her!!!!

Glad to hear that sanity prevailed-- that doesn't always happen in a hospital! (I have worked in one for 13 years.....I should know....LOLOL)
