the what's the next best thing? Organic? Cream thinned with water to replace milk til kids get accustomed?

Organic, non-homogenized and low temp pasteurized would be the next option.

It's difficult for us to access raw so when we can't we get organic unhomogenized.

Raw is the best, and if not available, pasturized and in no way homoginized. If I don't have either of those available, I would go without milk. I have heard of using plain whole milk yogurt and watering it down like milk, and I may go with that if I had to.

I buy the highest quality I can get my hands on. Currently that is organic, pasturized and homogenized. As a result we don't DRINK the milk, but I have made yogurt. I want to make Kefir too, but I need to get some grains.

Yes, this. We are very lucky, in that we have a local dairy that delivers organic, pastured (grass-fed), non-homogenized (cream-top), low-heat pasturized whole milk. Before we got this, my DS had all sorts of asthma problems, but since getting this, we have only had very mild problems. I know that raw milk would eliminate those problems.

If I couldn't get this, I think I would eliminate all non-fermented dairy products from our diet.
