So much poop!

I thought that bowel movements slow down after a while. DS is 3 months today. He poops at least 5 times a day...probably around 8 times most days. He does take Zantac...don't know if that increases output or not.

How often does yours go? I'm just not sure if that's normal or not (we are having other issues as well and I'm wondering if the amount of poo is related). Thanks!

My family doctor says that anything from 7 times a day to once every 7 days is considered normal for a breastfed baby. I don't know if that means it is all healthy, though.

I don't remember when it slowed down with dd, I think it was kind of back and forth for the first year. Ds is 3 months, and he has a bm once every 3 days or so. When he was younger (up to 2 months?) he would have a bm with every diaper change...some smaller than others.

My ds use to have 3-4 BM/day up until 2.5 months. After that it suddenly changed to 1 every 2 days. I wasn't concerned because he seemed happy and the consistency was the same.

My daughter will be 8 months soon and she poops anywhere from 1-3 times a day. I remeber she used to poop a way lot at that time.

My DD had some swings. Until about 6-7mo, DD went 1x per day everyday. Then we started solids, and it went as high as 7-8x per day and as low as 1x per week. I think it was because of the types of food we introduced plus her digestive system just getting confused. By 8-10mo, the swings narrowed a bit to 2-3x per day to 2-3x per week. With each swing, we tried to compensate by giving more binding foods (banana, applesauce, bread, etc) or more loosening foods (prune, prune juice, pear, peach, etc). With teething, we see more loose consistency in poop off and on though no change in frequency. Now DD is 13 mo, and she goes pretty much 1x per day. One interesting thing is it is a little bit psychological for her so she doesn't poop when we are traveling or when we have overnight guests. We went to my sister's wedding so we were traveling for 5 days, she did not poop the whole time. When we came back, she caught up by pooping 2-3x per day for a couple of days!

For your baby, if it's been consistent, I wouldn't worry too much about it. But if the increased frequency coincides with other issues, it's good to wonder whether they may be related. He might be begninning to react to what you are eating. DD started to be allergic to my dairy consumption at about 3 mo. Is he EBF? Then I would think about your diet. Are you having diarrhea? I feel DD and I sometimes have the same digestive issues.

At least he is not constipated, that is always worse than going too much - trust me!

Good luck!

My older daughter pooped 5-6 times daily until she potty trained at 2.5. Now it is down to 2 or 3.

Our younger daughter poops once every couple of days.

Both were EBF until 7-8ish months, DD2 is eating a bit of soilds now and both are still nursing.

DS is 6 months old and goes about 3-4 times a day. Some days it's more or less. I wouldn't worry so much unless the color changes dramatically.

DD usually pooped 5-10 times a day at that age. She was almost 8 months old before she went a day without pooping, and she's never gone more than about 3 days without pooping (followed by 3-5 poops the day that she starts pooping again).
