Has anyone read either of these? I am deciding between the two. I haven't heard anything about "screamfree parenting", but it has good reviews on Amazon.com, so just wondering what people here think of that one. Thanks!

I wasn't really impressed with 'scream free parenting'... First of all, I'm not a big fan of parenting books that don't offer practical solutions to specific problems... and this book was about his 'philosophy' and seemed... well, to be a lot of common sense.

See if your library has it before putting down the $ for it... because it was stuff like "respect you child for who he is, and parent for the person he will grown to be--so give him respect and space now as a child so he can grow into a competent adult."

Which is great, and I totally agree... but how does that help me with this specific problem now, XYZ? Which is why I read parenting books-- to find concrete solutions to specific problems, or to just "touch base" to make sure I'm not totally freaky, you know?

I don't really need a parenting philosophy.

Another thing that really bugged me about the book--and actually made it so I couldn't finish reading it, was the little tm for Trade mark after the words Scream Free ™ throughout the book, like this:

Scream Free ™

I'm sorry dude, you can't claim these words as your own, and I can respect (sort of) wanting to protect your intellectual property, but come on...

I think that if you want a philosophy book then Screamfree Parenting may be a good choice, but if you want actual parenting interaction advice along with philosophy then you should go with the Discipline Book. I read the Discipline Book when my dd was under one and it was actually very helpful because it put a lot of things in perspective, gave me a sense of age appropriate behaviors, and helped me see that I needed to let a lot of my unrealistic expectations go. I have referred to it from time to time for other things as my dd has aged and I have found it helpful.

I'm not familiar with the Scream free book but I have the Discipline Book and I love it. Whenever I need some inspiration I will bring it out again and go through it or whenever I have a specific problem and need some ideas. I have other books as well that are great (Jan Hunt, The Natural Child, Naomi Aldort Raising our Children, Raising Ourselves) but I still think the Discipline Book is a good place to start and it will always end up back in your hands :-)

Thank you for the reviews!! don't think "screamfree" is at all what I'm looking for then. Sounds like the Discipline Book is totally what I'm wanting!
