Booster seat question

Okay I know this may sound like a completely dumb question so i'm sorry! Okay My DS1 who is 5 has been in a convertible seat for quite a while now and he's almost 40 lbs and it says that when he's over that weight that it changes to a belt positioning booster. So does that just mean that I stop putting him in the harness and then just use the cars seat belt and put it through the car seat?

I'll be soon buying him a brand new high back booster seat but until then I'll still have him in his convertible.

TIA!

You should take the harness straps and buckles off the seat first. There should be a belt guide for the shoulder belt somewhere on your seat. A high-back-booster would probably be a better fit for the belt, though.

Depending on his maturity level, you might also consider something like the Graco Nautilus which harnesses to 65 lbs and then becomes a high-back booster, and then a backless booster, to 100 lbs.

What seat is your DS in and how tall is he? Many kids will outgrow 40lb limit harnesses by height way before they actually weigh 40 lbs. (Not all, depends on the seat & the kid, but very many do) If his shoulders are above the top strap slot or the tops of his ears are above the top of the seat, he is too big and you need to stop using that seat ASAP. Also note that some seats which harness then booster do not allow you to use the top slot for harnessing, it's only a setting for the headrest when used as a booster....check the manual.

Thank you both for your replies. The seat i have him in now is a
Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite that he's been in since March 2005.I believe at his last visit with the pedi he was only 39 1/4 inches and 36 lbs.I just looked at a Graco Nautilus, that looks nice! I've been having such a hard time deciding on which seat to get him next and that one definitely helps to narrow it down! Thanks

Wow, he's tiny! My littlest is a lot bigger than him and I am definitely not ready to put him in a booster. The Nautilus would be a good choice that will keep him in a harness for a good while.

That seat is one of the better 3-in-1, IMO - when used as a convertible. (The booster is rotten though, like most of the 3-n-1's.

Check your state laws too, some require kids to be harnessed to 4 yrs AND 40 lbs. I'd definitely vote for the Nautilus or Frontier over a booster at his size - my just turned 3 yr old is roughly the same size as your ds.

Hes soo tiny still I'd really want him harnessed for longer. We moved from a harnessed carseat to a HBB at around 5.5years but shes was also over 50lbs and is fairly tall for her age. barely 40lbs and at his height If I could I'd look for a car seat that could harness him longer.

You really want to keep him in a 5pt harness a bit longer. There are booster seats that 5pt harness past 40lbs. But yes, you do need to stop using the 5pt harness on your seat once DS reaches 40lbs.

As a CPST I would keep him in a 5 point as long as you can. The Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite, It not a good booster!

I just bought a Graco Nautilus and love it! Walmart and target are the cheapest in price. BRU the highest for the Nauti.

Maybe repost this in Family safety and get more of a response.
