Reading Rockets: Handwriting Club: Using Sensory Integration Strategies to Improve Handwriting

You know your child best and, of course, can make the determination whether she is ready for handwriting, but speaking as a mom who is struggling with her 5yo son 's handwriting issues (hence all the research into the above links), if I knew then what I know now, I would have focused much more on FUN fine motor skills activities at that age. My son knew all his letters by sight, name and sound, at a ridiculously young age (before 2yo), and he was already reading simple texts by age three. I wish I had still focused on letter
formation activities, which I didn't because he already "knew" his letters. I wish I did more stuff like sand writing, making letters with wikki stiks and playdough, coloring pages, letter of the week stuff, etc. In other words, many more sensory activities and far less of the pen-holding type of activities. There are soooo many media with which to "make letters." I would just strongly encourage anyone with a preschool-aged child
who is ready for letters to focus on letter formation activities that are NOT pen-and-paper or worksheet-based.
