How can I investigate Buddhism?

And is there a difference between Tibetan and Zen Buddhism? I was looking over the book "A Simple Path" by the Dalai Lama and am more interested in Buddhism now than ever.

How does one begin a study of Buddhism? The Dalai Lama's book is a little confusing and I'd like a more user-friendly work or source.

Everything I have read about Buddhism seems to indicate that this path would be beneficial for me and my family. Also, I have not yet discovered anything about it which conflicts with my beliefs (or lack of beliefs!). Please tell me all you know, mammas!

I think that the best introduction to Buddhism is
The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh.
you might also check your library to see what books of his they have on hand. he is in the zen tradition. i find he makes teachings very accessible.

the core teachings are the same in zen and tibetan buddhism, but there are differences in meditation styles, some ritual practices, and other more perhaps esoteric elements.

the branch of tibetan tradition with which i am most familiar is Shambhala. Pema Chodron has many books that might be in your library. many links to articles and teachings on the site.

a great resource is the website Tricycle Magazine. at the bottom of the page there is a place where you can "find a dharma center"--in case you decide to pursue learning with others in your area.

i am not an expert, but have studied buddhism for a while. post any questions. and good luck!
