My friend Kari posted a huge list of really cute ideas back in August, around the same time we started...here's a link to her blog post:

We had special "school" presents waiting for DS on the table (new box of markers, new journal, etc)
We took the traditional 'first day of school' picture
and I packed up all his first day of school "schoolwork" to be opened on the last day of school

I know 'wear your pj's to the first day of school' is pretty popular We always make something extra special/cool for lunch that day (IN lunchboxes so they feel like all the 'other' kids). They get new lunchboxes, which get used a couple of times a month or more for outings, and a new school hat (very into sunsmart here!)

The only time we've ever "celebrated" it has been a question of going out and doing something very fun and frivolous and relishing the fact that we can do so, while the kids' agemates are mostly sitting indoors. A trip to the beach, going out for ice cream. This time of year I guess it would be swimming at a pool or hotsprings, going ice-skating and stopping for hot chocolate at a café.
