Can we talk flowers/pansies???

If anyone has experience growing and keeping pansies alive, I'd sure appreciate advice. I have 244 pansies that I planted about 8 weeks ago. I'm in Texas (8a is my zone). I've never grown pansies but many people do (successfully) around here. The 244 I have out front face north (it is very windy where I live - I'm outside of the city if that matters). We get a good amount of north wind. I have about 15 - 20 out back (south/east facing with some protection of the wind due to house). The pansies outback are doing fine. The ones out front look practically dead and have for several weeks.
They are in nutrient rich beds and get watered with the automated sprinkler, as well as by hand when they were getting established.
What concerns me is it's been very cold (cold for TX anyway), down in the 20 - 30's with snow, then it warms back up to the 50's with sun, then drops back down again (supposed to be in the teens later this week). But I always thought pansies did well in the cold. I'm also confused since the pansies out back seem to be doing fine.
What can I do, if anything, to bring these back? They aren't dead, per se, but the green leaves look very dark and they aren't producing any flowers (opposite of those in back). The ones in front get the same amount of sun as the ones in back and the drainage is the same. The only difference I can think of is the ones out front are topped with light wood mulch, the ones out back aren't.
When I called the center where I purchased them they couldn't tell me anything other than I can return them for a refund with my receipt (they are guaranteed for one year). That's fine, except I planted all 244 of them and my back ached for 2 days. I really don't want to have to dig them all up and replant another batch. I can't find any info that seems right to me online. I'm fairly certain they don't have any fungal damage. Other pansies in my neighborhood seem fine.
Please help!

Sounds like the ones in back of the house are being protected from most of the weather from the house and the ones in the front are unprotected from the weather. That's the only thing I can think of. They might recover when the weather gets better.
