Crafts

I have a 19 month old and was wondering what kind of crafts to do for his age. DH put a chalk board up in his room and that is sometimes an activity he will do but since we can't be outside much anymore I am wanting to do some crafty things. Suggestions?

It depends on how messy you can let things get. Both of my girls loved playdough around that age, my 2yr old still does. Also, glue is great, we just made drums out of oatmeal containers wrapped in decorated paper with all kinds of stickers, glued on objects, colored...

There are some great craft sites that have all kinds of ideas. At that age, they are able to do quite a bit really, just let your dc go and the creativity grow.

DS really likes paint. We've done finger painting and he's used a paintbrush. We made T-shirts for my parents. I did his handprints on the back and then let him paint the front.

Mine like playdough, coloring and painting. They sometimes like to glue. They like to help me bake - use the mixer or roll dough out. (best if egg free)

Get a big bag of soup beans or pasta. Have dc sort by shape/size/color if they're into sorting. Use a spoon to have dc put beans in an old sock. Sew or fold closed. Beanbag.

Not a craft really, sort of a piggy back on the bean bag thing. Activity/sensory tables are a big hit. I only do sand outside, but beans, pasta, feed corn are (sometimes) allowed in the house. Mine also like to wash dishes. Fill sinks halfway, plastic dishes, toys or recyclables and some dishcloths.

Aren't crafts great? With my 2 yo and her same-age pals we like:

* stickers (on paper, or in special books. )

* sponge-painting and brush painting (making wrapping paper is fun. I got a huge roll of newsprint from a newspaper office, it's great and you can cut any size for big or small paper activities)

* baking (they love mixing and rolling and tasting the product!)

* water play (with or without bubbles; on the floor I put an old shower curtain and some towels, measuring cups, spoons, etc. )

* ice cubes (with cups, towels, etc.)

* edible play dough (check recipes online)

Have fun crafting!

i agree with others ideas. we do a lot of collages, good right now if you have wrapping paper scraps around, i cut out or rip up things, provide a glue stick and a base piece of paper. sometimes ds puts glue on or i do and he sticks. this is good as a redirection tool for ripping things that aren't meant to be ripped, like library books or magazines we haven't read yet.

I like to check out this blog from time to time to get good craft ideas:

The Crafty Crow has lots of good ideas. I linked to the toddler section, but you can filter by other age groups too.

Also for collages I cut up little pieces of scrap fabric to glue onto paper.

You could make stamps from potatoes to use with paint. Also, things like pinecones, empty spools of thread, toothpicks, well, anything, and dip them in paint to see what shapes they make on paper.
