Is this pump safe??

Thread Starter
Borrowing a Medela Lactina from WIC office, pretty sure all parts have been used, nurse did tell me to boil everything but the tubing before I use it (apparently no milk flows into the tubing), just wondering how sanitary this really is? I hate to go through the work pumping my milk only to have it contaminated by the pump kit having been used by countless other mothers of unknown health status. I have to go back to work in 6 weeks and really need to start building up a stash if I am to keep him in breast milk whilst I am away...

Help?

Milk definitely can get into tubing of any of the Medela pumps, even the Lactina. That is why they are supposed to issue BRAND NEW pump kits with each rental. The WIC office can get into serious trouble if they re-using the "personal equipement". A new pump kit should include, bottles, flanges, tubing, a manual pump (that fits into the Lactina) and all conectors. The big blue pump is re-usable.

New kits run about $45

They should definitely be giving you a new kit to go along with the pump, that is a serious violation on their part!
Can you call them or go back to question this? The Lactina is meant to be a multi user pump as long as each individual is given new pumping parts.
