I did this with my students today, and you would have thought that I had given them all ponies, that is how excited they were 
I used BioColor tempera paint. I squeezed a little in to tiny condiment containers- a great way to recycle them, or if you have one, use an ice cube tray. Cover with foil and poke in a craft stick or recycled popcicle stick. Freeze until solid. Remove with a little warm water, let get a little melty, then paint
The texture changes and frozen paint is just totally awesome. They loved it.
