6yo dd has persistant urge to urinate (no UTI)

she is going to the bathroom countless times in the day. often when she gets to the potty, she says "it didn't come." we went in to the doctor on 21 dec, they found no infection in the urine sample. she was constipated, and that has cleared up. i thought it would have improved her situation, but the problem continues--slightly improved perhaps, but not resolved.

any ideas? my poor daughter is getting frustrated.

Do you have her taking any supplements? I had something really similar when I was taking acidophilus about ten years ago. The store was out of my usual brand, so I switched to another with a higher dosage, and I started feeling like I had to pee ALL THE TIME. I even went in to be checked out, and bought those little strips to test your own urine, and everything came up normal. I started looking back and realized that feeling started around the time when I bought the new acidophilus. I switched back to my old brand and that went away within a day or two. Weird, but that's what it was for me!

I hope your dd feels better soon.

Subbing.

My dd has this problem occasionally. It has cleared up on its own, so we haven't been to the doctor for it.

Google pollakiuria. It's NOT scary, and it may not be a fit for what your daughter is experiencing...but it was what afflicted my son (same symptom) intermittently between ages 4 and 6.

I was going to suggest that as well. My dd had that, pollakiuria within 8 hours of watching her baby bro being born here at home... long story short but I drove the new baby and her to the ped.'s within 12 hours of his birth b/c she was complaining soooo horribly I was certain she had an horrific UTI!

nope. nothing. Pollakiuria can be brought on by a sudden "change" or "trauma" to a child between the ages of 4-6 (roughly) and that was certainly the case for her... it lasted on/off for months before she decided to finally let go of her "pee-pee issues" and I guess get used to the fact her brother was here to stay!

If it keeps up for weeks with no other symptoms (fever, chills, etc.) it might be worth considering... best of luck to you.

My dd had peeing issues from constipation (caused by food intolerances - gluten and dairy) and also as a direct symptom of food intolerances (salicylates, eggs, and soy). There is a bladder condition called interstitial cystitis that is associated with irritation from certain food chemicals (salicylates). Feingold diet targets food chemicals.

thank you for these replies. i'm not sure that i can pinpoint any stressor that could have caused a problem. i'm continuing to watch closely, especially noting what we eat. tho i don't eat much cheese, dd is crazy about it; i am keeping it to a bare minimum to avoid constipation. also i am trying to make sure she gets enough time outside. once it ruined bitterly cold, and less exercise....that could have led to constipation.

as a child i often lay in bed unable to sleep, feeling as if i had to pee....then going and no pee....and i just hope this is over quickly for dd.

thanks for the support, and the good ideas. i mdc.

For my son, there was no particular stressor, but he has an anxious personality (prone to worry) in general, and that sometimes contributes to this sort of thing. Also interesting to note that until the frequent urge stuff began, he withheld urine and only peed two to three times a day-- upon waking up and at bedtime, and maybe once during the day. The doctor said withholding was a different manifestation of this same thing...Just throwing these out in case it rings a bell for you or anyone else who's following this thread. I hope she comes out of it soon.

my dd1 did this the year she started kindergarten... so also at 6yrs. no uti or any other physical reason. she did not seem stressed about school but we figured just the change in routine was enough for her. we just tried to down play it, give her lots of positive attention for anything else and she also took a "vitamin" that the dr suggested... cranberry extract etc... she loved them and the symptoms went away in a few days of starting all of this... she still remembers this and in fact was just talking about it today. she is now 10funny little thing that kids do sometimes, i guess... hope your dd is better soon
