Casting on with double yarn question

Experience knitters, I need you help. I am making a pair of knitted slippers for a friend's new baby. The soles are knitted in double yarn (single colour) which I haven't done before.

The pattern says to cast on 8 stitches. So, is that 8 couplets making 16 loops of yarn around the needle or is that 4 couplets making 8 loops around the needle?

Thanks everyone.

You cast on eight stitches with the yarn held double, just as if you were casting on with one strand. So you'll have 16 little loops, but you'll pick up both strands so you're still working with 8 stitches.

As you knit along, your going to be holding both strands in your hand. It's really important that you grab both strands as you knit.
