Prolacta advertising

So with all the talk of deceptive formula advertising... maybe it's just me but something seems very wrong to me about places like Prolacta using sneaky advertising to get donors. You know, pictures of sick babies... "Your milk could save lives" type of talk. With a tiny, almost invisible "for profit bank" printed in the corner. I just saw one of these emotionally-charged ads pop up somewhere and it really left a bad taste in my mouth.

I know a little bit about Prolacta's shady history, but I'm not sure if anything has changed. Is it normal to see these advertisements in places that support breastfeeding?

An ad for HMBANA banks, I could see.... but this just seems sneaky. Maybe it's just me.

I've never seen an ad like this - could you point me or post a link?
I'm German, and there aren't any milkbanks left to my knowledge (the ones in the ancient GDR disappeared some time after the reunification).

That would bother me too. I don't like the idea of someone profiting off of donated milk. Either the milk should be available at cost from a non-profit or the mothers should be able to sell their milk. It's very sneaky and I don't like how they are laying a guilt trip along the lines of "if you don't give your milk to us then babies could die". What a terrible thought. Ideally anyone who needs milk would be able to find a donor in their area and the donation would happen directly.

The ad was in a magazine. One that I'm sure most of you read... *ahem*

I found that invisible disclaimer very disappointing as well.

And to add fuel to this fire, I've just learned that Prolacta's milk fortifier (the stuff they make for-profit with most of the donated milk to the http://www.breastmilkproject.org/) is now being marketed by Abbott Labs (aka SIMILAC).

Oy.

Do you have a link to the press release or something announcing this?

wow, if that ad was where I think you said it was, that is very surprising and disappointing.

I have always been disappointed in the idea of Prolacta, but now even more so...
