My cat is pregnant

Please before anyone comes on here flaming me, I am not your typical run of the mill type owner. I have been heavily involved with rescue for several years now mostly with Great Danes but with all dogs/animals in general. The cat in question, Blackie, was a stray that wandered up in Sept., 3 days after our other stray cat that had been with us for 4 years passed away. I noticed that she was young, less then a year and had never had kittens. Well a few months passed and she never went into heat so I just assumed she was fixed (our other stray was fixed when she found us). We moved in Nov. from the city to the country and she liked being outside so she was an inside/outside cat. Well in late Nov., early Dec. she came into heat. Despite our best efforts to keep her in, our 3 y/o twins let her outside one day and now she's pregnant.

Even though I've been involved in rescue, I have never had a litter of anything. I watched my current Great Dane be born but that was at the hands of my friend and I was just an observer.

From the dates, I'm guessing she is due in early Feb. I have set aside a room for her that no one goes into as just hers. Right now it just has her water, food and a litterbox. My hubby is going to make her a cat box and as her due date approaches, I plan to keep her pinned in that room. Our house is huge and there is no telling where she would deliver and I don't what her to deliver in our basement b/c we would never find her or the babies down there.

We do plan to keep at least one and I am going to look into spaying/neutering them before they leave through our local humane society. Can anyone give me any tips or helpful hints on what to expect before, during, after labor? kitten care? We are very excited for this accidental litter but plan to find the best homes possible for these little guys.

My previous cat had 4 kittens and she did very well on her own. I didn't have to intervene at all in anyway. I just sat by her and sang to her and encouraged her and pet her head a little and gave her some water, but she wasn't interested in drinking. She took care of everything all by her self. It was pretty scary for me since I was only 18 and all alone with no phone to call a friend for advice or anything. I also didn't know anything about a cat going into heat so I missed all the signs, really I didn't notice anything during her first heat and that's why she got pregnant.
