Non-vaxing and hosptial admissions

Help me stand my ground.

My twin dd's are almost 4 and were vaccinated until they were 1 y/o when we stopped. Their doc hasn't exactly been supportive. I hardly ever take them to the doc, but because of some mild asthma, we've had to go. And I don't know of any docs that are supportive where I live, so I just put up with the little bit of pressure she puts on me on the occasion that we see her.

One of the other docs in the practice admitted one of my girls for pneumonia on Saturday. They both tested positive for strep (and we were all pretty ill - me, dad, and sis). K was lethargic and hypoxic, but totally turned it around and we should be leaving today. The doc that admitted us didn't say a word about vaccinations (I think she assumed we were); the doc we actually see is the one rouding (and hopefully sending us home) today and it was one of the first things out of her mouth *sigh*

To me, this is totally a non-issue. Dad and I both had our childhood vaccines and we still got sick. The girls were positive for strep A - not a VPD. And although there's no real way of knowing now what caused her pneumonia, one of the peds where I work mentioned that he'd been admitting kids for "strep pneumonia" (which is what our diagnosis is).

It's just frustrating. Even if she wanted to assume that her pneumonia was something that could have been prevented from the HIB or Prevnar, I'm pretty sure my girls had most (or all? Can't remember and don't have shot records handy) of those vaccinations since they were fully vaccinated to one year of age.

Anyway, just spelling it out for people to disect before I have to stand my ground.

ask lots of questions...sort of dumb ones...

was this pneumonia vaccine preventable?

which vaccines would have prevented it?

when are they on the schedule?

how many other children has the hospital seen with this same illness?

were they vaccinated?

That should do the trick.

Thanks Deborah for replying. She shocked me and didn't say a word. Not even about flu. Probably saving it for the 2 week follow up.
