Yogurt question

I've been giving my 8mo a taste of Stonyfield organic yogurt when I have some. He LOVES it and I would love to let him have a little more- is that ok, it's not 'baby' yogurt, does that matter?

I think most any yogurt is fine so long as it doesn't have added sugar. I personally would stick to unflavored, wholemilk varieties, but that's the kind of yogurt that I use for myself also. I know that the "Strauss Family Creamery" does vat-set yogurt, which is a good brand if you're worried about plastics leeching. Around our house we eat Nancy's yogurt because mama thinks it's yummy

A whole milk kind with no added sugar would be best. It's also really easy to make your own. Just google for instructions.

My DD ate yogurt at that age. I would mix in some mashed up avocado and her fish oil.

"baby" yogurt is just whole milk yogurt in non-allergen flavors.. banana, vanilla, etc.
I agree with PPs about non sugared yogurt. I have a skinny little guy so I try to find the highest fat content yogurt we can- I think the Trader Joes full fat Greek plain yogurt has 18 g fat per cup. I think thats the highest we've found.

Yea that. Baby yogurt has too much added sugar and is more expensive to boot! I plan to try a little yogurt on Friday (would do tomorrow but don't have any in the fridge!). Figure DS might like it since it's cold and yummy and he's teething. Definitely plan to start with whole milk plain Greek yogurt.

Will mix a bit with a cube of fruit puree (probably pear or peach) and let him go to town!

Is it ok for babies to have dairy before age 1? Hmmm, I don't know why I thought it was better to wait, something about allergies?

Like other common allergens (eggs, wheat, etc), I don't think there is benefit waiting much beyond 6 months unless family history of food allergies. We won't do cow's milk (to drink) before at least 1 but I see no reason to hold off on yogurt - so many beneficial things it offers! We'll just go slowly and watch for any reaction but I don't expect one, knock wood.

Baby eats what we eat, usually the plain Stoneyfield.

And from what I've read it's ok to give starting at 6 mos.

I think the usual recommendation is to wait 1+ years on dairy. But yogurt is different than regular dairy in that its fermented. Basically the proteins (mainly cassein, which are what cause allergies) in yogurt are already partially broken down by the fermentation process. Just because baby does fine with yogurt doesn't necessarily mean he/she will do fine with all dairy. But that's why yogurt is an "okay" first food, whereas other dairy is not. I'm sure the ladies in the traditional foods section would have a more comprehensive explanation
