Sewing flat/prefold question

Apologies if this has been asked many times before.
I want to sew some newborn size flat/prefold size diapers to use for baby, for me post-partum, and as doublers when baby is older.
I've seen some bamboo velour "prefold" diapers for sale, and wondered whether I could do the same kind of thing with bamboo sherpa or french terry (or even cotton sherpa or french terry). I'd sew simple squares or rectangles, turned and topstitched so the knit/smooth side faced out, and possibly sew a couple of rows of stitching down the middle for folding lines (like on a prefold).
Do you think this will work?
Will it be absorbant enough without being too bulky around the hips for the baby?
Can I just copy the size of a regular newborn prefold?
Anyone done this who can share their method?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, I think it will work. This link might help.

Thanks!
Now to decide on size - do I go with the size of a preemie/newborn prefold, if I don't have the extra layers in the middle (figuring that the fabric is more absorbant), or do I make them the same size as the bamboo velour and hemp ones I've seen without the extra padding in the middle, which are slightly larger (12x12, instead of 9.5x13)?
Decisions, decisions!
