Hair washing for long haired kids - Updated with pictures post # 26 - Page 2

Mine go to bed with damp hair when we wash it during the week but I try to only wash their hair once a week on Sundays and try to make the bath a little earlier.

I braid my dd hair and ds isn't long enough to braid yet (and I can't bring myself to cut it so I am happy to see other with boys with long hair) so we just comb his out and let it air dry.

I do use CA Baby detangler when needed

We also wash once a week in the weekend. My DD also has long fine hair.

Wow Thanks for all the replies. What a great topic to share so many TIPS. I am so thankful!

Yeah DS’s hair is special and sometimes not in the best way LOL

He is 6 and it’s never been cut except for the bangs when he was very young. It’s thick, fine, and curls into ringlets or just poofs out into a mess. When wet it’s down to bottom of his tushie. When dry it’s mid back to top of shoulder blades.

I can in no way brush it when it’s dry, it’s too tangly. Although the 1970’s fro look is fabulous!

For washing I do this:

Wet hair thoroughly.
I do not use shampoo except occasionally. Sometimes I use baking soda but mostly I just skip it.
I go straight to conditioner and use Pantene Straight n Smooth.
I smather it in the hair and scrub on his scalp at the same time.
I use a comb “brush” to comb it out in sections. It’s tough and I am as gentle as I can be.
I then rinse the conditioner out.
Towel dry with gentle squeezing.

It’s easier to comb through if I have “washed” it 2 days ago. Going any longer (ie: a week) and it triples the amount of time it takes for the process. More like 20 mins of hair combing. If its humid it’s worse. Meaning his hair just coils up more and more until it wants to dread and is hovering by his ears. Detangling that is a nightmare.

Wish I could share some pictures of his hair…. How do I do that??

His hair sounds lovely!
Do you have a photo somewhere like on facebook or on flickr or wherever?
If you do - right click on the photo, then click on properites. Youll see an 'http://' thingy there - Highlight and copy that. Paste it here to share! hehe

My ds is 7 1/2 and other than bangs and ends being trimmed we have never cut the length. We wash his hair 3 times a week and I try and time it for periods where we have a little time. Of course that is not always possible. I also agree going to bed damp but we braid it before hand so it is not in knots in the morning. But be prepared for gorgeous waves when it is combed out the next day. It almost looks like crimb curls. If it is long enough you can also try a bun high up as well but honestly braiding is easiest.

He is getting to where he can care for it himself now which is a huge help! He cant really do braids yet but loves ponytails
