This ammonia-injected beef comes from a company called Beef Products, Inc. As NYT reports, the federal school lunch program used a whopping 5.5 million pounds of ammonia-injected beef trimmings from this company in 2008. This company reportedly developed the idea of using ammonia to sterilize beef before selling it for human consumption.

*i'm so mad and disappointed that i can't say much about this right now. just wanted to throw it out there to those who may eat fast food or whose kids eat school hamburgs.

Here's the original article, and after reading both, the natural news link is really just the tip of the iceburg. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/31/us/31meat.html

I'd like to say I'm surprised but I'm not, not one little bit. Pretty freakin' scary. No more fast food burgers for me!

Yeah, this does not surprise me one bit. In college, I was a McDonald's manager for about a year and that completely turned me off from fast food for the rest of my life. I'm thankful that we just don't ever eat it. Dd has never even eaten McDonald's in her 8 years and I hope she never will. It also makes me thankful that we get our beef from a local (non-certified) organic farm, who is also a friend. It pays to know where your food comes from. I wish more people were aware of this (and cared) and put the fast food chains out of business.

Yeah it is a good read. There was a great article yesterday on the health "reform" not including alternative care. Just fyi, its good info.

Unfortunately, I'm not surprised either. I wanted to bring it to people's attn in case their kids eat them at school. The meat & dairy industries are what made me go veg 20 yrs ago. Still, I am disappointed that the whole system is so filled with such BLATANT disrespect for its people. What a slap in the face to feed this toxic chemical "food" to our nation's kids! Ugh.

That is so disgusting I can hardly believe it.

To add salt to the wound, HuffPo is reporting that they have found fecal matter in soda fountains in fast food restaurants. Something like half of those tested have the bacteria found in poop. How gross is that!!

I cannot even fathom why anyone would eat this crap. Literally.

I really enjoy eating out, but this is one more reason why I should just stay home and further improve my cooking skills. Blech!

We raise our own meat chickens and buy beef directly from a local organic farmer, but it's good for me to read articles like this to reaffirm my convictions.

Ew! & Yeah, absolutely. With fast food, it feels sickening that people may be unaware of what they're getting BUT they are eating fast food... really, at 99cents a burger what quality can you expect. We've all heard the stories of what goes on in the kitchen at those places. Its not rumor.

The thing that gets me about this article most though, is the level of betrayal of hundreds of thousands of people by feeding it to kids at school who have no choice. I'm shocked that more people aren't outraged. Not here on mdc, but that sooo many people apparently knew full well what was/is going on & didn't call it for what it is, a crime. Many parents don't think that the schools are feeding their children chemicals, I imagine that most see that the menu is approved by the FDA and call it healthy. & the reason the chemicals are there in the first place is to kill (which was found to be ineffective, btw!) ecoli & other crap! Ugh. It should be an outrage. Why am I paying taxes to support such blatant disrespect? Attacking our kids' health?? I don't have kids in the school system and don't support the dairy or meat industries, but i do pay taxes and this seriously irks me.

Alright, off to do something more productive than complain online, lol. But geez, this article, just, !!!
