twin birth at home in colorado

Thread Starter
I just had an u/s at 18.5 weeks and saw that I'm having TWINS! I'm thrilled, my husband is thrilled, and my three daughters are thrilled. We're having a boy and a girl.

One of the very first thoughts I had when the technician said "los dos" was where I would be able to have my babies. I am a very strong proponent of home birth and have had three extremely successful, beautiful home water births. Of course, I think I should be able to have twins naturally at home as well, since I know that I'm pretty much doomed to a C-sec if I go to the hospital. The only problem is that CPMs are not allowed to assist in home births in this wonderful state of Colorado. It's considered "beyond the realm of expertise". I have no idea where to turn since a home birth is what I desperately want and believe would be the best for my family, of course, if there are no serious complications.

Does anyone have any advice on finding a midwife that is willing to work with me for a home birth, or at the very least, an OB that has delivered twins vaginally? I'm willing to do anything to avoid a section.

CPM's are allowed to do homebirths in Colorado. However it is my understanding that no midwife is allowed to attend twin home births. Current regs are here http://www.dora.state.co.us/midwives/Rules.pdf ... I am not seeing it, so perhaps they have changed it???

ETA: Nope, not changed. See page 5, #f. "The registered direct-entry midwife shall refer mothers for evaluation by a qualified licensed health care provider and shall not continue as the care provider when a multiple gestation or a presentation other than vertex at the onset of labor are noted."

Maybe a possibility. If I ever get twins I am seriously considering doing the same.

What area of Colorado are you in?

What part of Colorado are you in? Dr Hall in Denver (he delivers at Swedish) is a strong possibility for someone who would be willing to do a vag twin birth. He's been a doc forever and is willing to do higher order VBACS and vaginal breech deliveries, so not much "scares" him. KWIM?
Dr. Baer in Colorado Springs (he delivers at Memorial North) would also be a strong possibility.
I don't know of any CPM that would be willing to do it, but I don't know them all.
Good luck!

I would imagine that you could find a dr who would deliver twins vaginally. I had a really wonderful, drug-free, vaginal delivery with my twins, even though the setting was very clinical and not what I would have preferred (in an operating room "just in case"). The big key for me was having a really awesome, experienced doula who really went to bat for me and helped me express what I wanted. They did want to do a c-section initially, but my doula said, "No, you know you don't really need to", and they knew she knew what she was talking about!
I hope you find a great ob and have a fabulous birth!

I have a friend who gave birth to twins vaginally in the Denver area I believe. I will get in touch with her and get her doctors name etc for you.

Congratulations! I wanted to ask, was this 18 week ultrasound your first ultrasound of the pregnancy? I mean, did you have one before and they missed that there were two? Were you measuring large? Just curious.

I'm in Colorado as well, you are correct in that CPM can not legally assist at a twin birth. I do know some that do any way, they don't advertise this of course. It doesn't hurt to ask around your area.

What about a CNM instead? My home birth is being attended by a CNM. Surely they're allowed to do it, since that regulation says direct entry midwives can't do it, which is obviously not what CNM's are. I don't know if there are any in your area that do home births, but you might find one.

If you feel strongly about homebirthing, you might also read some of the stories on the web about unassisted homebirths of twins. I'm blessed to be living in a state where no such restrictions are placed on our midwives (though I've never been in that particular situation either).

I, myself, have only UC'ed singletons, but it would be difficult for me to make the decision to go to a hospital to have my babies.

I've never heard of CNMs attending homebirths -- how neat that there are some who will!
