a friend of mine was told with her first that she was having a girl but when the baby was born he was definitely a HE!! he went nameless for a couple of days and there were some dresses and some pink that got put away and mentally it took her a few days to adjust... understandably!

I've heard of this happening before where someone is told they are having a girl and end up having a boy... I'm wondering if anyone has had it happen the other way?? that they were told they were having a boy and what the technician thought was a penis turned out to be the cord or something and the baby was a girl?

I'm expecting my 4th, I have 3 girls, I was kinda hoping for another girl to be honest just because it would be easier (room-sharing, clothes sharing, etc.) but up until this pregnancy I would have been thrilled with a boy! I still will be, but I'm just wondering if it's possible that it wasn't actually a penis that the technician saw?

I do know of it happening to two people I personally know, that they were told boy and had a girl. Its much more common, of course, to be told girl and have a boy!

Myself they have been correct with both times so far though.

With my first two, they were right on. With this one, it remains to be seen... The first two I *felt* like they were the gender that they were - and there was only one name that we came up with for each of them, which is the name you see. This one I was *sure* was a girl. Just felt SO certain... the ultrasound at 18 weeks says boy.

I did some looking and it seems that even with perfect conditions - experienced ultrasound tech, plenty of fluid through which to see the baby, and baby's legs spread - the chances of it being wrong are still 1 in 1000. For what that's worth. Luckily, I'm prepared for either gender at this point, since I have one of each, but I *have* been sort of tending toward gender neutral stuff for this one when buying or knitting stuff. I just am not sold that it's a boy... but if it is, that'll be just fine.

I didn't answer the poll.

My assumed DD is still in utero, so I can't answer the poll. However, my cousin was a boy until the day SHE was born.

I had asked my OBG nurse the stats on gender accuracy u/s and in 5 years they had 2 u/s gender mistakes. I think those are pretty good stats. I forget which way the mistakes were (whether the u/s tech thought boy but ended up being girl, or other way)

I think that's what is making me doubt the u/s. Before I realized I was pregnant, I had a dream that I was pregnant and HER name was Kalli and the next day I realized that it was totally possible that I was pregnant and did a test the next day. I am totally NOT feeling any boys names and keep coming back to Kalli. With my first two girls, it was girls names all the way although I had a back-up boys name, just in case! (I didn't find out they were girls until the last couple of weeks of pregnancy) It was just super ODD to have her tell me it's a boy. I guess I'll believe it when I see HIM.

I think it has to do, a lot of times, with the expertise of the person doing your ultrasound. Some places don't have really experienced techs doing them... I've heard of them even being done in regular OB offices but whoever on staff is trained.

Yeah. I keep saying "well, I guess we'll know for sure in March..." I *still* don't feel like it's a boy... which kinda makes me feel sad that i'm not just embracing it. I dunno. I'm trying... it just doesn't feel "boy-ish" to me like Oliver did. It feels "girlish" like Sophia did. *sigh*

Good question. We had a sono at 17w4d and the tech said boy. We had to repeat for a few reasons the next day, 17w5d and a different tech said girl.
The first tech "thought" he saw a penis and said that unless the tech is well trained in sex determination, that really 17w4d was a bit early. The lady the next day said that 16 weeks is plenty early to tell, and that while she didn't see girl parts, she also did not see boy parts, thus making her confident to say girl.

Needless to say, we are lightly planning for a girl but won't be suprised if it's a boy.

I have read that accuracy really depends not only on the ability of the sonographer but also on when you get the scan. Anything before 20 weeks or so could be shaky. We had ours at 21 weeks, and it was pretty clear that she is a "she." She's due in April, so the theory has not yet been "proven," but even I can tell from looking at the picture of her flashing all her business (you bet I'm saving that one for future embarrassment!) that she's got lady parts.

With DS I had one at 17 weeks... and the sonographer told me that she couldn't tell for certain and usually wouldn't be able to at that stage

when I went in for my 20 week U/S (the one at 17 was for an emergency check) they had no problem at all seeing that he was a boy.

I wouldn't trust a sonographer that says... since I cant see anything its a girl. I would more trust the one that says, it may be too early but I think it may be a boy.

I was told DD was a boy. Fortunately we had another u/s a few weeks later that showed she was, in fact, a girl, so at least it wasn't a big shock when she was born.

I have one friend this happened to. I have definitely read it is the less likely of the two scenarios though.

How far along were you for both of those? Was she spreading her legs for both?

Gah... now i sort of want another ultrasound, but our last one was $500, so that's a big NO unless there's a real reason.

Elsie is still unborn, and I had my last ultrasound at 18 weeks, but even I could tell she was a girl (I could see the 3 lines of the genitals) so I'm pretty confident. All the old-wives tales said boy, but I don't put much stock in those.

First two sons were exactly what I was told.. third bio son I was told boy then told girl then told boy again.

I was told boy with my first two and they're boys. I was told boy with this one and I'm inclined to believe it We'll know for sure in April

I've had 4 girls now and I have seen the u/s with all of them...they were definitely girls!! 3 lines clearly, and no sign of any male parts whatsoever. If you are really wanting to know you could always go for a 3d/4d one...it's pretty tough to miss the results there. <g>

This time around, we're assuming girl until we SEE otherwise...and even then I'd be shocked and I'd have to have a serious look to believe it! LOL U/s is in early Feb.

So far with this pg I've had 4 ultrasounds and was told maybe boy twice and maybe girl twice. I'm feeling very frustrated with this. I already have two boys and really want a girl. I had thought I was having a girl until the first ultrasound when I was told it "might" be a boy. I accepted that it was a boy and moved on then ultrasound 2 maybe girl, u/s 3 maybe boy, u/s 4 maybe girl. Seriously people?!?!?! It makes it even worse that they are 2 different techs; tech 1 keeps saying boy, though she hasn't actually seen a penis, she may have seen scrotum but it not sure and tech 2 says girl b/c there are no signs of boy parts but hasn't actually seen labia. All 4 times the baby wouldn't open it's legs good either. :/ They were going to do another ultrasound but I really just don't want to anymore. I can't beleive them either way now at this point. I never had these problems with my previous babies either.

My sister's experience is the reason we haven't found out gender with our three pregnancies. She tried to conceive her second for five years before giving up. When she miraculously got pregnant a year later, she was sure it was a boy. Her emotions were probably swayed by the fact that she really wanted a boy. She already had a girl and she knew this was going to be her last pregnancy. But she was confident the entire time that it WAS a boy. When the US tech told her she was wrong, that it was a girl, she cried for a week. Then she put her game face on and decorated the nursery in pink teddy bears. When the baby was born, the OB offered to come help her paint, because it was a big boy.

After that, I just couldn't take any chances. We didn't even bother with an ultrasound in the first two pregnancies. With this one, I asked the tech not to tell me gender as she was scanning the bits. There were floaties, so I have suspicions. But we just dragged out all the "gender neutral" baby stuff again.
