My dh is set on getting a UV light (normally made for lizards) for overall winter health and vitamin D production. Has anyone tried this or even heard of it? Pros? Cons?

I believe I recall they are a zillion times cheaper than the prescription-required UV lights. Something about uvB light, maybe? Post if you locate more info.

Probably because I don't believe we *know* what part of the sunlight ("UV rays") is beneficial.
We thought sunlight was good.
Then we thought sunlight was bad. And we get "too much".
Now we think sunlight is good. But we "don't get enough".

I live in a very sun-deprived region of the world, and use a sun lamp every morning. I got it at a medical supply store. It really does help. However, having owned a lizard, and a lizard lamp AND this medical sunlamp, I don't really think they're the same thing. The lizard lamp produced a lot of heat. The idea for the lizards is to simulate the heat of the sun, not so much the light of the sun. In fact, it was necessary to make sure the lizard didn't overdo it under the lamp and burn himself (which happened once or twice). The medical sunlamps aren't hot at all, just really bright. There is no way a lizard, or anyone, could accidentally burn themselves on it. I would check into it a little more before spending money on a device which may not help at all unless you're cold-blooded and wanting to avoid going into artificial hibernation.
