papaya spears and teething

My 4mo is teething - just starting to express some real pain from it. My DP says he gave DSS dried papaya spears to help with teething. Anybody know about this? Scares me a bit as we haven't introduced any foods or flavors yet, obviously, but I can't find anything that says NO. It's not as though he'd be Eating papaya, just gumming the dried fruit.

Thoughts??

The papaya spears I've encountered have a sort of coating that would come off with just sucking too easily for me to be comfortable with a 4 month old having it. And some have sulfur and such.

I'd load the diaper bag and car with an assortment of teething toys and ask dh to not use a soft food for teething again.

Now, if you've tried sucking on the dried papaya yourself and only got papaya flavor, and you know it doesn't have sulfur and such, then sounds like a great teething toy. Whole adult carrots are also awesome until the front teeth come in and permit scraping.

Actually as long as it's the sulphur free variety I think it's a great idea for teething!
