BLW and diapers

Oh I bet you all want to know what I mean by the title...

Basically this: We are doing half and half BLW and purees. That's how DD wants it. She's not a big eater. But some things (like pears and apples) she wants in a puree form and others (like carrots and bananas) she wants in french fry sticks to chew. I've tried all her foods I am feeding her so far in both ways so I know which she likes best. She's not a big eater, she mainly just "plays" with her food but occasionally will get into the idea of eating.

However, when she eats the BLW-Style veggie/fruit "french fry" shapes she takes these huge chomps off. Sometimes it scares me and I swipe it out of her mouth. But many times she swallows the whole bite.

And...It comes out in her diaper exactly the same as it went in! Like for example the other day her diaper was filled with huge cooked carrot chunks. It was actually quite freaky. So is that normal? Shouldn't her body be breaking it down somewhat? Is she getting any nutrition from the BLW-style foods we give her? Why are they passing through virtually unchanged in size, color, shape, and texture?

I'd say it is pretty normal. My dd's diapers look similar. I'm sure that their bodies are breaking down much of the food, just not all of it.

FWIW, I don't think that adults fully process every bit of food either...

The purees are going straight through too.

Totally normal. That's why it's so important to continue bfing.

The expression "food before one is just for fun" made me feel better about what ds was & was not getting.

normal! DD is blw, she's 7.5mths and the only evidence of anything going down has been broccoli in her diaper! BF baby poo with bits in, LOL. It's just a reminder that the food they get at this age isn't much nutritional value to them.

That was exactly our experience too.

That was understanding why food is just recreation and totally unnecessary before one. Breastmilk is digestible. Banana not as much until they mature a bit more.

Sounds normal! I've seen whole black beans in my now 19 month old's poop...

Maybe fits the title more than the discussion...

I'm curious about BMs in babies eating food. My LOs BMs are not solid by any means. I thought once they begin eating food, things would firm up and then you could "dump" the poop out if the diaper.
He eats sweet potato, apple sauce, peas, avocado, banana. Usually just at dinner. I found pea skins in my washer and decided I needed to start removing the poop from the CDs, but like I say it's like sticky mud and no amount of swishing is going to get this stuff off.
When will this change?

Ds is 14.5 months & eating a lot of different foods (pretty much anything we eat). His poop is still not "solid" most of the time. And he stills poops constantly. Yesterday he pooped 6 times!!!

We are having the opposite problem. DD2 loves food!!! Now I am dealing with a constipated baby. She doesn't drink enough liquids to make up for what she's eating and apparently breastmilk isn't cutting it either. She still nurses just as much as she did before she decided to dive into eating, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I actually went and bought pureed prunes to see if that helped, but she will only eat them on occasion. She wants food she can hold and feed herself.

get the imse vimse flushable liners. you can wash them w./ the diapers if they just get pee on them. they last FOREVER like that but make cleaning up poop a breeze.

we do p/t EC with the current baby and she does like 95% of her poo in the potty (and like 85% of her pee in diapers). So glad! I hated those food-eating-baby poop dipes. If your LO always poops at a predictable time, you could try "catching" it in a little potty too.

And fwiw I think there is a lot of variation in poop like everything else. My son who is now 5 has never had "hard" or formed poop. He still doesn't.

I was under the impression that "hard" poop signaled a bit of constipation?

I thought "hard" was in quotes because she couldn't think of the word firm.

They survive the laundry? We use flushable liners, currently kushies, because we ran out of the ones we usually buy online and these are available locally, but I've never attempted to wash ones that are only wet, should we try it? or is it only something that works with the imse vimse ones?
I had some others that were hand-me-downs on a roll- maybe the kushies ones? They did NOT wash well. The Imse Vimse ones lasted forever though... many washes- maybe at least 5 or 6? I only ever bought 2 packs and never even finished the second pack during that 6m-18m period. And I used almost all cloth diapers.

And ugh, hard, firm, whatever. I can't describe poop anymore today! I'm just trying to say, while he was in dipes, my son's poops were never easy to just plop in the toilet w/out the liners. I did babysit for babies (same age) whose poop was more like that. I dunno. My son has NEVER been constipated, so maybe its like you're likely to deal with one problem or the other?? And, ew, toddler poop. I was so glad DS decided to stop pooping himself young, and that DD already uses the potty for most of her poop too!

My DD's poo is in between....definitely not BF poo, but not really firm either. She is 7 months and takes BLW VERY seriously. She hasn't spit out a single food, and will chew and swallow an entire banana on her own. Of course, I had to cut down on the bananas because she got constipated...she couldn't go for 3 days! She kept trying and trying and was just in so much pain. Eventually, she got out three poops that were way too huge for her little bottom. My point is though that all babies are different, and breastmilk has way more nutrients than solids, so I wouldn't worry!

A whole banana! Wow...I am stunned. I get excited when DD eats like 1/10 of one
