My son's forskin was retracted by his doc...NOW WHAT?

First off, I have to admit that I didn't stop the Dr. when he retracted my son's foreskin. It all happened so suddenly that I was caught off guard. I wasn't expecting him to do that at all. I'm not trying to excuse myself, I feel horribly guilty for not protecting my son. I cried most of that day and am considering taking the dr. the AAP handout advising against retracting the foreskin the next time we're there... IF we go back.

Now that it's happened, and he did it forcibly enough to make it bleed for most of the rest of the day... It's been two days since it happened and it looks like it's healing well. what can I do to try to avoid future problems such as adhesions and infection?

I've been changing his cloth diapers way more frequently than normal. The wipes solution that I use is a very diluted natural baby shampoo solution mixed with water. I don't rinse this off his skin after wiping as it's VERY diluted. He's never had a problem with it.

Do i just leave it alone and watch it for infection? We're NOT going to continue to retract it as the dr. suggested.

Do any of you mamas have any other suggestions?

Oh yeah.. my son is only 2.5 months old... if that makes a difference.

This is what I would do. Make an appointment for the Dr. asap. Take the literature, and ask him why he is practicing medicine without being up to date on the current medical information.
There is one woman on here who always says, to tell the Dr. before clothes come off not to manipulate, or retract the foreskin. For future reference. I can imagine how surprised and shocked you would have been.

I think there are situations that we need to speak up about so that those who come after us aren't treated the same way. This would be one of them. Imagine mom's who don't know any different, or who do, and have to fight this Dr.
Speak up about it. He shouldn't have done that and you should tell him so.

I am sorry to hear about what he did to your baby boy.

I'm so sorry this happened. I don't have any advice but I'm subbing because I'm interested in other responses. It's amazing to me that "doctors" do stuff like this but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. More like extremely disappointed. I'm so sorry mamma.

I'm sorry that happened to your son mama. Do take the time to educate your doctor, if he did that to your son, he's done it to other boys.

And you may want to consider refusing to take off the diaper at all unless there is a very good reason for it.

Here is a very good article about the problem of premature forcible retraction:
http://www.kindredmedia.com.au/libra...ractions/401/1

You are going to need to talk to this doc, so he doesn't do your son any further harm, and so he doesn't harm any other intact boys. The attorney for Doctors Opposing Circumcision, John Geisheker, will send a letter to the doctor/nurse/hospital pro bono (free) on your behalf telling them what they did was wrong and the potential legal consequences. Be aware, this may not win you any friends over there, so take this into consideration, if you don't have any other options for pediatricians. It isn't a letter stating you'll sue, but it is fully referenced and ought to get their attention.

Email him at docdirector.geisheker@gmail.com

Before you contact John, you will need the following information:

A full narrative of the incident -- Baby's name, baby's b-day, age, what you were told, after-effects, all the details.

The name of the doctor or nurse who did this, the name of his/her practice and their (snail) mailing address.

The name of the hospital where the doctor has privileges (the hospital where they practice) and the mailing address (even if it didn’t happen at the hospital).

The name of the CEO or Administrator of the hospital (even if it didn't happen in the hospital, find out where the offending doctor has privileges and send it to those hospitals)

The name of the hospital's risk manager.

The name of the head of the department (OB, peds, emergency, etc.)

Letters will also be sent to:

The state medical board in your state.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (hospitals fear them like a boogeyman)

I'm very sorry about what happened to your baby and to you!
Please speak up, the PP seems to have provided you with a very good plan of action. I would also like to encourage you to tell us about the follow-up on this - there sure are mothers here who could learn from your experience.

Again, sorry you have to go through this!

Wow! Thanks for the info. I read the article... very informative indeed.

Since he and his PA are the only ones in the area that are "non-vax and delayed-vax" friendly Drs... I may try to take a less frightening approach. I will most likely take the article to him along with the AAP handout. If he seems to blow it off, then I will take the stronger approach and have a letter sent to him, and the hospitals he has privileges at.

Also, my son looks like he's healing really well. He's been doing LOTS of comfort nursing since the appointment and has needed to be held most of the time... but I'm not complaining about all the snuggle time... I LOVE that.. just don't like that he's feeling insecure right now.

Again... thank you all for the support and info. I will update you all.

This.

If I remember correctly, there's no reason for him to be in there unless hes 1) Checking a circ healing or 2) You've asked for him to look at something.
