Do you knit/crochet for yourself?

Thread Starter
I have 28 projects in Ravelry, and only eight of them were for me - everything else was for DH, DS, a gift for someone else or an item to sell. There are so many projects in my favourites that I want to make for ME, but I just never get around to it - it's always seems so much more motivating to make things for someone else. I started some simple wristwarmers for myself in August and they're still not completed, gah!

I really want a hat though, so I've committed to making this one for myself: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...nky-slouch-cap Should be quick enough to make so that I don't get sidetracked by another project

Do any of you make things for yourselves? Do we need to start a support group?

Nope..I'm not a really experienced knitter. But I don't knit for myself at all. i am wearing a hat that I knit but I had intended it for someone else and well I fell in love with it and kept it. BUT I've yet to knit anything with the intentions of keeping it...that's really sad

Not usually..

Though, I am making a yummy scarf for myself currently with some soft fuzzy green/turquoise/denim/purple colored yarn. It's sooo cozy and I can't wait to finish it! The more I work on it the more I love it! (I'm hoping I'll have it done by the weekend!)

I have been knitting and crocheting since I was 18 and have only made one item for myself! A big granny square blanket for my bedroom. I want to knit myself some cardigans but either someone wants me to make something for them, or I get caught up in soakers, sweaters, socks, hats, for one of my babies! They are my favorite to knit for, I constantly have something on the needles for one of them, all year!

Well I'm the opposite of you all!
I am trying to for every 10 items I make for myself or family, make one for charity (lys collects boobs for breast cancer survivors and preemie hats). Maybe you could adjust that rule for yourselves? Pretty sure you deserve it!

nope, not usually.

funny when I was a hooker I did that kind of thing all the time, I still wear crocheted scarfs & hats self made years ago.

Somehow when I took up knitting (again) I left myself on the back burner. In fact just recently I purchased two skeins of handspun- one babmboo and one silk. I made hubby a bamboo Cousteau cap for x-mas and planned on making myself a silk scarf. Then I actually got to doing it and realized I need to send it to my girlfriend across the pond.

I made myself a pair of felted mary jane slippers and then gave them to my aunt for x-mas.

I think I need support here

I recently finished my first real project for myself, a Perth Wrap, made from wool my mom brought me back from Ireland. I really enjoyed knitting it, and it is lovely, but when I was blocking it I realized that usually at this point I have an excitement, anticipating the recipient's joy - and it wasn't there! So I guess I get more out of knitting for others.
That said, I do plan to knit more for myself, because honestly, I call myself a knitter, but I wear storebought things! So for Ravelympics I plan to make myself a set - a Holding Hands Feeding Ducks scarf, Celtic Moonrise mittens, and a hat, pattern yet to be determined!

come to think of it I do wear a few of my own knits but neither was intended for me.

I guess I'm just a really loose knitter because I ALWAYS have to downsize patterns. I made some children's socks for my 4 year old daughter and whodathunkit they fit me! I also made both DDs kitty cat hats for Halloween and X's fits me so I frequently don that one too!

Absolutely. 2009 was my year of knitting only for someone who really appreciated it: which was mostly me. It wasn't a productive year, true, but it was fun.

So with the exception of me, my mom, gma and immediate family (including SIL)- who is knit worthy? Not really anyone. So I knit for us! I am not knitting for someone who thinks it is being cheap or won't take care of it!

I knit alot for myself- and I wear most of it too! Love love love beautiful handknits!

I think I have kept maybe 5% of the things I have ever made for myself. I always intend to make something to keep but I really enjoy giving handknit things away to the people I love.

knitting is the 1st craft I've been involved in where I keep almost everything for myself!

I give things away of course, but I keep a lot.

I knit myself socks this year, mittens, washcloths, a scarf, afghan, Christmas ornament...

when pregnant, does knitting stuff for the coming baby count? sure feels like it

the first several things i knitted were for myself, and since then i've knittend myself one scarf. the matching hat has been partially completed in a bag for 3 yrs.

to be fair, my husband gets the next shortest stick - seems like there's always a baby/kid around who's my current muse.

How timely - I just posted on myblog today that this is the Year of Knitting Selfishly! I am determined to do at least 10projects for myself, and listed them on my blog so I can hold myself accountable!

What I usually do is I spend my whole birthday month (January) knitting for me. My own little birthday present to me. So far I have done 2 hats and I am half way through with a pair of gloves. I have one more hat planned now b/c my sister gifted me some Baby Grande Alpaca and I can't stop touching it so therefore I'm going to HAVE to knit it! I will probably cut my month a bit short so that I can start working on dd's birthday present (a basket of knit fruits and veggies) and my sister birthday present (star crossed slouchy beret) which both are needed by mid february.

It can be hard to carve out time for oneself, but sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do

I do! I don't make sweaters and the like for myself because I'm such a frequent closet-weeder that it wouldn't be worth it. But I love to make myself and my home things that will get used.

I have mostly knit for other people so far. I have a few hats, headbands, a pair of socks and just knit myself a pair of mittens when I realized I didn't own a single pair. After knitting dozens of things for other people for Christmas I've declared 2010 a selfish knitting year. I'll still knit for other people but I have lots of stuff planned for myself. I have already finished a hat & mittens and will be knitting at least 2 sweaters for myself. I also want a hat in every color of the rainbow and a pair of socks for every day of the week.

I have been meaning to knit a cowl for myself for 2 months now but keep getting tied up in projects for others. My neck is cold though so I need to get on it! I have knit myself 2 hats though - I love the instant gratification (and at least my head is warm)

That's about where I'm at. I'd love to knit for myself but I've got too much to do first.
