i'm looking for a series for my dd to enjoy. we are studying american history this year. i've thought about the "childhood of famous americans" series (i like how someone broke them up by topic at redshift: http://www.redshift.com/~bonajo/COFA.htm )... or perhaps "the young patriots" series. are there other series of books that are non-fiction biographies written for children that you love? my dd is 8. TIA.

My boys are younger -- but i would love a seris to read to them that is not too hard fro them to follow and undertand -- so maybe what an 8 yo can read, mine can follow?

The Childhood of Famous Americans series is highly fictionalized. I've read a couple of them to my children and they are okay but if you are looking for NF I think I would go with something else.

The Landmark books are good. Some of them are being republished by Sterling Books and can be found at B&N. (These reprints are NOT the ones that say 'Landmark' on the covers and are thinner, although those titles may be okay too.) There is a list of titles here http://www.valerieslivingbooks.info/lm.htm

Genevieve Fosters books are good too, though many of them are not specific to one person.

Another vote for D'Aulaire. Ds(8) really loves these.
