Timeless Principles for Infant and Child Nutrition

June 9 @ 7:00 to 8:30 pm

Gym-Mazing/ Kidz Yoga

27-14 23rd Avenue
Astoria, New York

Are you seeking to give your family and particularly your children a healthy, well-balanced diet? This presentation answers the question "Can children be well-fed but malnourished?" by offering an in-depth look at the true nutritional needs of growing children and the dangers of depleted modern foods, including many labeled as "natural" and "organic." We will examine the historic significance of many foods that are now vilified ...as dangerous and unhealthy, and explain why a return to a traditional, nutrient-dense diet is crucial for restoring our youngest generations to health and vitality. This seminar will provide an overview of the pioneering research of Weston A. Price, a dentist who traveled to isolated communities around the globe in the 1920s-30s to learn about traditional and modern diets and their impact on dental health. He discovered that people living on the natural foods of their ancestral traditions enjoyed not only healthy, straight, cavity-free teeth, but overall excellent health as well.

Hannah Springer, MS, HHC will present on traditional foods for children’s health and speak about her personal health transformation after she adopted a traditional foods diet following the birth of her son. Hannah is a co-leader of the Brooklyn Chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation and leader of the Parents’ Group of the Traditional Nutrition Guild, a group which provides support, education, resources, and social opportunities to families seeking to raise their children on a traditional nutrient-dense diet. Hannah received her training as a holistic health consultant at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in Manhattan, and is certified by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. Hannah offers health and nutrition consultations for women and families with babies and young children, traditional foods cooking instruction, and an array of prepared nutrient-dense traditional foods products.

Herbs and Kitchen Remedies for Fall and Winter Health

Just as foods are best eaten seasonally, so also are many herbs. In this presentation, we will hear from Claudia Keel, a clinical herbalist, how seasonal herbs can be easily included into our families food and drinks for both vital health and immunity. She will also present information on how to easily use herbs for common winter ailments as they arise – for both adults and children. Re-skilling with these age-old remedies and techniques helps our families avoid many illnesses, and heal well with strengthened immunity when we do become ill.

Claudia Keel is an herbalist, flower essence therapist and nutritional counselor with a practice in Union Square in Manhattan. She teaches courses and at conferences in all three disciplines on both an introductory and practitioner level. Claudia is also the Weston A Price Foundation NYC chapter leader and the founder and developer of the Traditional Nutrition Guild and Traditional Foods Club. Claudia is also an Assistant Organizer of this meetup group.

The word Reiki means spiritually guided life energy and is a Japanese stress reduction technique that promotes healing and relaxation by the use of energy. It is believed that when our life force is low we are prone to illness and we then need to increase life force.  The practitioner transfers energy to and thus increases the life force (chi) of a recipient by placing the hands closely above them while he or shy is lying down fully clothed.  At this meeting, Reiki Master Johanna Gunnarsson will give a presentation about this alternative healing modality.  She will explain what Reiki is, its history, the concept of healing with energy, how it is practiced today and examples of its growing acceptance within mainstream medicine.  She will also perform a brief demonstration on a volunteer participant.

Johanna Gunnarsson has been a Karuna Reiki Master since April 2010. Prior to choosing a career in alternative health, Johanna travelled and worked in more than 40 countries. A life-long athlete and outdoors enthusiast, and certified as both a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and a GAPS Practitioner, Johanna is also the Queens Chapter leader for the the Weston A Price Foundation. Johanna's career in the field of nutrition  and Reiki began as a result of her own health issues that she finally resolved with the discovery of the healing powers of food and the life force energy, which triggered a passion for helping others achieve better health. Johanna believes that for true health to be achieved both body, mind and soul needs to be in balance.

Child care will be provided in an adjacent area at $4 per child.  Alternatively, as age appropriate, children may sit with their mother during the meeting (e.g. in-arms babies or children over 12) or attend with an adult dedicated to their care.  Please let us know if you would like to reserve a spot with the child care provider.
