Finding a homebirth-friendly pediatrician

I could use some suggestions around finding a homebirth-friendly pediatrician. Our midwives don't have any suggestions since many of the best practices for this in our area aren't taking new patients. We know they need to take our insurance, but we would love to find someone who could do the first visit at home and won't pressure us about vaccines and let us make our own decisions.

Is there a network where you can look for practitioners? How did you interview your doctors? Any suggestions are welcome since this is new territory for me!

Check in your Tribal area, i bet some mamas there can point you in the right direction.

That's a great suggestion-- thank you-- I am on this board and my due date club, but haven't visited the other yet! Thanks!

Consider a family practice doc, too. They tend to be more easygoing than pediatricians. When mine found out about my last homebirth he said "There's really no reason to be in the hospital anyway."

Interesting-- I didn't even know that family practices accept infants! Great idea.

We switched from the pediatrician I saw (and my mom even saw him when she was a teen) to a younger family practice doctor, and the difference is amazing. I can't say best medical decision I ever made, 'cause that'd be homebirthing, but this is a close second.

Dr. Sears' website has a list of friendly pediatricians. There weren't many listed in my area, but it's worth a shot to check the list. I think patients submit their doctors' names.

Our son's family practice Dr. is totally homebirth friendly too. And the Dr. I am seeing along with my homebirth midwife is also family practice.

Do you know if your city has any message boards? I belong to a few local boards and that is a great way to find out which Dr.'s would fit with your family.
