most affordale eco/sustainable kitchen/bath renovation??

Thread Starter
Hi all, I am wondering if anyone can make any recommendations for where I can find eco-friendly, sustainably produced, and non-toxic products and contractors who specialize in green renovations, and which are most affordable, in the northwest new jersey area.

We have had a pipe burst in a house we are purchasing, and have been asked for our input in the replacement of counters, cabinets, flooring, etc. And I would like to gather info so that I can ask for it to be done in a greener way, using nontoxic (and salvaged, if possible) materials.

Can anyone suggest somewhere for me to look or someone for me to call?

Basically, I've heard that renovating in a good, green way doesn't have to cost much more than doing it the usual way, and I want to find out how, who and wshere as quickly as I can.

Thanks!
Amanda

I would imagine you should be able to find a contractor or a store that specializes in this kind of thing. They will have already done much of the research into the materials and will be able to give you that info rather than having to research it all yourself.

Have you tried googling eco home improvements for your state?

Try looking up a 're-store' in your area. They may also know of other places. They often have sinks, tubs, cabinets, fixtures, etc. - esp if you are a bit flexible about the size of things.

Otherwise craigslist is another place to check.

What year is the house?

I like this site: http://retrorenovation.com

I personally don't believe in "green" home repairs, because truly the most eco-friendly house is the one where everything is maintained and restored, not ripped out and replaced! But with a busted pipe, this is not an option!!

We have to tear out the kitchen in our new home (old, peeling paint, rotting wood, etc) and, instead of putting in a "new" kitchen, we will be going with a european style unfitted kitchen. We will use antique pieces for kitchen cabinets and counters. We prefer this look and it is a very green option.
