We just received g/c for xmas and I want to get ds a few books for dh & I to read aloud. I need some good suggestions, so what are your favorite books to read to your little ones?

From looking at your sig line, the ages we're talking about here ...

Am very attached to two Robert McCloskey books, "Blueberries for Sal" and "Make Way for Ducklings." (Not all of his books are so lovely, but these are.) Lovely, lovely books. Even for toddlers, the books are very gentle and I used to read them in a soft, almost hypnotic tone for the younger ones, and they would have me read it over and over and over and over and over again ...

Five in a Row has my favorite reading lists. Check out www.fiarhq.com

I would start with the Before Five in a Row list for your ds's age range. We're Going on a Bearhunt is one of my favorites on that list.

My boys loved all the Shirley Hughes books, especially the Alfie stories and Dogger. I must have read them a hundred times.

Other faves:

Time for Bed by Mem Fox
Jamberry by Bruce Degan
The Mr Putter & Tabby series (anything by Cynthia Rylant really)
The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry & The Big Hungry Bear
Goodnight Gorilla
James Herriot's Treasury for Children (of All Creatures Great & Small fame)
Catwings Series
My boys all adored fairy tales & mother goose rhymes from a very young age too.

Don't forget poetry. I was surprised by how much my kids loved the poems in Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends. They also like When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six by A.A. Milne, and lots of the poems in various poetry collections we own. And we just got a really fun book of tongue twister poems from the library that we all like - Orangutan Tongs by Jon Agee.

The Pigeon books by Mo Willems and the Boynton board books, particularly the one about belly buttons.

Full Moon Soup by ~ Alastair Graham (Author)

An amazing picture book. It will crack you up and be the most worn book in the house because it takes many look-throughs to finally see it all.

Diary of a Wombat by Jackie French is a *great* book. Very simple text. Adorable illustrations. I also love Josephine Wants To Dance by the same author. Both come as board books or hardcover.

My kids have loved the Hairy Mclairy books. Especially Hairy McClairy and the rumpus at the vets and Hairy McClairy and Zachary Quack. They like the rhyming text, the wonderful illustrations and the recurring characters. I love them because you can read them over and over again without getting bored to tears.

In fact, I was just reading this book at work today (daycare), and told my coworker "When I have kids, this will be one of the first books I buy".

We love Jamberry here, too! So much fun to read. Also, anything by Donald Crews - Freight Train, Truck and Blue Sea, especially.
