question about forced retraction

DS is a former preemie and spent his first 3 months in the hospital. He is intact, and since circ wasn't even mentioned until he was pretty close to discharge, I figure the NICU is used to dealing with intact boys. With that said, I have since learned that not all medical professionals know much about intact penises. We weren't there for every diaper change or bath, nor did we know about the dangers of forced retraction at that time, so we never talked about it with the staff. We were there every day, though, and never saw any evidence of problems with that area.

When he was released from the hospital, our first ped told us to retract and clean under the foreskin. Being new parents who trusted our doctor, we did pull it back a little at diaper changes for a little while. We didn't feel like we were forcing it at the time, but it still seemed kinda wrong to me, which led to a lot of research and discovering that it was not good.

DS has never had any issues with infections or anything else. However, I know he can retract at least somewhat because I've seen him pull it back a little during a diaper change. He's 2 1/2 now and he's been able to do it for a while, which I know is unusual. So I am wondering if either he was forcibly retracted in the hospital, or the partial retraction that we did could have led to it. More importantly, I'm worried about having caused a potential problem in the future....is there anything we need to be on the lookout for?

Actually it isnt at all unusual for his age to be able to pull back on the skin some. At that age my ds could expose about a fourth of his glans by 3 he could do half. He is 5 now still not much more retractable than he was at 3. I know this because I saw him do it.

Mama, I think he's fine. 2.5 is young but not abnormal at all -- there's a huge variation of normal. I think if he'd been forcibly retracted at the time you probably would have noticed it.

My son was fully retractable by age 2 1/2 - 3 yrs and he was never forcibly retracted. Some boys just retract earlier, some later. I doubt the NICU would have forcibly retracted him. I hope not anyway.

Don't beat yourself up Mama...you didn't know. I didn't know until after I had my ds and did research too. I'm sure your little man is fine.

Thanks, mamas....I am feeling better. I was reading something about forced retraction potentially causing problems later, and it freaked me out a bit.

For the problems to happen retraction would have to happen over and over. Usually just once or even twice dosnt cause issues.

Same here - my 9y old son has phimosis (according to European standards) - so he can't retract (but there is no adhesion and he can pee just fine). Let's see whether the problem solves itself during puberty.
My now 6y old has been retractable for at least 3 years.
