documentary or books on homeschooling to help seal the deal with dh...

While ds is only 3.5 years, it is about time I start making the presentation and find ways to convince dh that homeschooling beyond prek is the right decision, ds will be old enough for k in the fall of 2011, so as i told dh before, I don't want to wait until then to make the final decision. Homeschooling was originally his idea, and now i feel like I am more of the one wanting to continue the homeschooling.

So, my dh is not much of a reader, so videos/documentaries are really the best way to reach him. We are not against public schools, we are not fundamentally religious, we just want the best education for ds, and I feel that would be met best at home, but further convincing may be needed. So hit me with your best resources...

Another thing, the public school system we live in is one of the best in the area, so how would i go about researching the school system itself?

I do use the unusual amount of homeschoolers in our culd-e-sac (6, all school aged families homeschool on the block) a reinforcement that maybe our public schools aren't as great as they are said in reports and on paper, but that's about all...

I'm pretty sure it was Lillian J who posted the link to this originally. It was taped at a homeschooling conference in California in 2009.

it might be worth your while to have a look at YouTube, type in Homeschooling in the search box and have a wander through the results. I have enjoyed watching some of the videos on there and they have helped give me the confidence to know I can homeschool. You will also find more humurous song type videos which I love. I did watch some informative ones from the HSLDA here is one

I don't have any video or such suggestions for you, but would be more than willing to share why we chose to hs despite being zoned in hands-down the best elementary school in my district and close enough to the border for free transfer to the best school district in the county (and one of the top in the state to boot) Our district isn't one of the best around (its actually pretty low on the state's ranking list) but *most* people send their kids to the elementary we are zoned in and then withdraw them once they finish 5th grade and begin homeschooling, that's the kind of school I'm talking about here. It was a very hard decision for dh and I to withdraw our dd after she finished K last school year, but we are very happy that we did after seeing how fast she's starting to gain momentum academically (our reasons include her having learning challenges and the school not being willing to acknowledge them or do an IEP until she was in 3rd grade and at least 2 grade levels behind)

If you have a really hard time convincing him, maybe look into the public virtual academies in your state. We are with one this year as a transition year from public school to homeschool, and are now discussing if we want to stay in next school year or go independent (we're still torn, if we go independent we'll be unschooling until the kids each are fluently reading and then we'll introduce more formal seatwork) Perhaps one of those virtual schools would be a good compromise for the two of you if he totally balks, although you have to follow all the state's regulations for public schools, log hours, teach the curriculum they supply, and have a teacher to answer to. For us its not a big deal because we need that structure, I have a tendency to not do anything with the kids academically if we don't have someone to answer to beyond my notification letter and an assessment by a certified teacher.

awesome thanks for the info! I watched the documentary it was very informative, i will have dh watch it too, he is not against watching you tube, lol..

Yeah the k12 academy is an option. It is available at a school district about 30 miles away and anyone can attend that resides in the state, i did check and only goes to grade 8 as of now, but that could change. I have thought about it, just because it may be easier for me in the beginning, but haven't officially decided yet. We have started a loose preschool program at home last week, to get our feet wet..I will check out the other websites other pp suggested now!

Homeschooling?!
Yes - I think this is a fabulous intro for anyone with doubts. You'll want to preview it, but I think it should do the trick. Lillian
