Is there a thread like this already? I couldnt find it so I started a new one...

Whats for dinner tonight guys?!

We are having homemade steak and onion pies from left over beef stew...

I might make some homemade potato wedges too not sure yet.

Black bean chili with chipotle. I'm going to serve it with some sour cream, sliced avocado and chopped coriander.

Last night's dinner was curried lentils with sweet potato, broccoli, peas and baby spinach, served with plain yogurt.

I'm in the mood for big bowls of warm, spicy stew-type foods this week. Must be the snow. Steak and onion pies sound yummy. We like meat pies here - although dh will eat them with mashed potatoes and mushy peas on top, but I can barely think about that combination!

Lamb shoulder stewed with carrots, onions and allspice, boiled potatoes with butter, and sauteed cabbage. Mmm simple nutritious warm food. We have lots of snow too

Tomorrow I am planning to make dill-lemon sauce out of the stew broth and butter and flour and mix in the leftover meat and potatoes from tonight. Probably more cabbage on the side I'm thinking.

That sounds absolutely gorgeous! Im not a fan of lamb but I assume it would go well with chicken something...huh?

We are totally into the winter warming stews these few weeks! Lots of cold wintry weather here!

I made "Spicey penne pasta with Tomatoes, Olives & Two cheese" out of the Bon Appetit cookbook for the first time tonight and it was GREAT! I left out the olives though, and just used mozzarella instead of the fancy havarati cheese that they called for. I'll definetly be making it again!!

On cold days I love chicken curry with pineapples but even cutting it with coconut milk seems like it might be too spicy for me these days.. I get heartburn so easily.. I bet you would like that though!

It would probably be good with chicken, sure. Beef for sure. The main thing is the broth that you use for the sauce should be the liquid from cooking the meat. The way I did it was I made a base with butter and flour, then whisked in the broth and let it simmer a few minutes to thicken, then added about half a cup of chopped dill (frozen, but I'm sure dried would work too, just less) and a squeeze of lemon plus salt and pepper. Then I added the leftover meat and veggies in small pieces. I can't believe how easy it was and it was super delicious.

Smoked kielbasa--hopefully I can convince DH to brave the cold to light the grill

Cheese pierogi with sour cream.

Sauerkraut

Not sure what else to round out the plate...

The stew I had planned for dinner fell through (forgot to soak dry beans, thought I had a can as backup but didn't), and I realized that if I took a short walk to the store for one ingredient, I could make the recipe on the opposite page in the cookbook :P So I ended up making Mohadra, it's lentils and rice topped with caramelized onions (seasoned with cumin, coriander, and a pinch of cayenne), garnished with dilled yogurt. It had great layers of flavor, especially since the seasoning was in the onions and the natural deliciousness of the lentils and rice was allowed to come out with just a little salt. Definitely umami!!

mm excellent! I now have extra dill I will need to use up this week! Maybe I should try freezing the rest. Thank you for the ideas, as always

I made a large serving of spicy cauliflower pasta. Including onion, green pepper and cauliflower, tomato sauce with oregano, garlic, red pepper flakes. Topped with grated cheese and cilantro. Yum!

Last night I had a plate of turkey bacon and a pear.
Very exciting, I know.

Chicken curry sounds yummy! Hmm, I have a chicken biryani recipe that I could pull out for this week...except after the curried lentils, the kids have informed me that they prefer Asian curries to Indian curries. Sigh - the problem with these soups/stews is that they are meant for lots of people to eat. Not exactly single portion cooking...

So sorry to hear about the heartburn. Last night we had a lovely broccoli soup with cheddar - the original recipe isn't spicy at all, but dh tried to use up some red chilis I bought for New Years' dinner (Thai Green Chicken Curry with basmati rice, actually). So maybe a nice broccoli or cauliflower or squash soup will warm you up?

I'm pulling some yummy chicken, sausage, and shrimp gumbo out of the freezer. My hubby made it a couple weeks ago, and it's sooo good. I'm going to make a spinach salad & cornbread to go with it.
