sewing machine recommendations

Thread Starter
I'd like some recommendations for a new sewing machine. I've been using what used to be my grandmother's from the late 40's. I love it, except that it only does a straight stitch, not even a zig-zag. Anyway, I really have no idea what to look for in a newer machine. I don't need anything super-fancy. I mostly want something reliable with some fun stitches and buttonholes.

I think If you want a new machine, Janome is very well built and reliable, even in the lower price ranges. You can look for another used machine, too. Many sewing machine stores take trade-ins and you can get a very good older machine that has been refurbished.

I second the Janome. I have a kenmore made by janome and love it!

I have two machines: a Janome (a really basic machine that I learned to sew on) and a Singer that I purchased through JoAnn's online.

I really like my Singer. I can get parts at many stores in my area (there are not many sewing stores near me, and I have to rely on JoAnn's for immediate needs), which was important to me. When a needle breaks or I run out of bobbins, I hated having to wait for something I had to order online for my Janome.

I waited (and waited) and really looked for the right machine in my price range and this Singer model fit the bill.
