Need Advice ASAP!!!

Okay here is the background, ds is 7 1/2 mo and has been sick since Sunday. Took him to the dr Sun for a bad cough, was told it was Croup and based on everything I read it was just that. He had a slight fever 101.2 on Sunday, very low to no fever on Mon and Tues during the day. Tues night started running hot again(didnt take a temp during the night) and was basically a mess, Wed his temp was 102.5, gave him Motrin in the am fever went down until early evening before bed it went back upto 102, gave him another dose of Motrin. Still had a fever Thurs am, 101.5, called the dr and asked when it would be necessary for me to bring him in, they said in one more day if he still had the fever, so last night no fever before bed but woke up at two am with a 101.1, and a coughing fit that lasted almost an hour. His symptoms over all of these days have been runny nose and cough, first it was the croup cough then Wed it changed over to a cold like cough.
Here is my question, he has had no fever today but the cough has gotten worse so I took him back to the dr who said his lungs were clear but he couldn't really see in his ears so he had me hold his hands and along with a technician tried to flush his ears, that didnt work so then he had me hold him down while he scraped his ears out. Still he said he couldn't really see anything but he might have an ear infection, he thought he saw some green wax by his eardrum. So he wrote me a prescription for amoxicillin to "err on the side of caution". I dont know what to do I am not of fan of the antibiotics but will it really hurt? My little guy is so miserable and I want to do all that I can to make it better but not if it means medicating him unecessarily. Advice please!

Sounds like an infection just running its course. If you are BFing I'd put BM in baby's ears. At this young age, unless abx was really necessary I'd try not to use them b/c they casn mess their digestive system. Babies can completely recover from ear infections (if your bubba even has one) w/o abx. It's questionable if abx really help ear infections anyway. If your baby is tugging at ears you could make a warm compress out of uncooked rice in a sock, and heat in microwave. Check to make sure there are no hotspots, then hold against ear and side of face. This helped my dd considerably.

completely agree with PP. How is baby feeling today?

I think I'd skip the abx too, if the fever was not consistent, and give Tylenol or Motrin etc for pain if he seems bothered. IF it is an ear infection, most of the will run thier course on thier own without abx. If it's not, then treating for one is useless. Most of the time if they are running a fever and coughing it is a viral infection.

Also, if he is still coughing and sounds "tight" in the chest, his lungs may be so full of crud that he isn't wheezing any more... a doctor that doesn't see kids with chest infections very often might miss it and you should ask for a chest x-ray if you think there is still something wrong in that area.

I too would skip the abx and treat with breastmilk and Tylenol. Hugs mama, I hope your LO feels better soon!

Thank you for your responses, I went with my gut and didnt give him the abx, still no fever as of today. He is still congested and coughing a little but seems to be on the mend.

How about some elderberry and echinacea to boost his immune and some garlic and mullein drops for his ears?

Hope he feels better soon!

Try some probiotics too! I give them to my DD by putting a little bit of water in a sippy cup and emptying the capsule into the water. Keep in mind that a fever is the body's way of fighting infection...so as long as it isn't too high it is good to just let it run its course. Glad he is starting to feel better.

My son had continuous ear infections since birth almost. We started a 1/4 dose of the adult dose every day for 8 weeks and off for 2, and continued on this through flu/cold season, and he hasn't had ANYTHING but a runny nose once since. I'll swear by it!
