Hi all,

I'm moving to Bilbao, Spain before the end of the month. My dh employer has mentioned this school "ORTIÑE ESKOLA LIBREA (KEL)" in the area http://izanleike.com/category/10246440/escuela-libre/.

Currently, my 3.5yo DS attend a local pre-school which has a "forest school" ethos http://hindleyspreschool.co.uk/index...d=59&Itemid=77

He really enjoys going to school and his present school is a really good fit for him. I don't want him to leave it, but commuting between northern spain and the UK is not an option :LOL

What sort of school is this? I am a little unclear as I have virtually no spanish. Is it a democratic school? I will of course be meeting with the school, but would like to have an idea of their principles and ideals.

I don't know if you ever got a response to this.

I studied Spanish in HS for 4 years, but I didn't get very far with this site.

So, I search google and found a translator. You enter the web address and it translates the page to whatever language you choose.

Check it out. http://translate.google.com/#es|en|

No KathyJo I didn't. I did the translater thing with babel fish. I've since visited the school and their philosophy is still no clearer - they seem to have cherrypicked different schools of thought. I've just enrolled DS in the local school which is free and withing walking distance as opposed to 210E/ month for 5 mornings and a 20 min drive.

Sorry you didn't get an answer. I'm going to move it out onto general Learning at School and see if anyone else knows.

The link you posted isn't working for me nor a google search for "ORTIÑE ESKOLA LIBREA (KEL)" A lot of escuelas libres in here in Spain are inspired by the work of Rebecca and Mauricio Wild who come through yearly to give workshops and talks... they've written several really interesting books about their experiences in Ecuador setting up and tweaking democratic schools, incorporating indigenous populations etc, but I don't think they were translated into English. However, they set up their projects picking/adapting materials from Waldorf, Montessori, etc with the idea of creating really open environments. I found their work inspiring, but it doesn't follow one established school of thought.

Yes,
theyve changed the link http://www.izanleike.com/post/kortine-escuela-libre

It doesn't really matter anymore, as he's started at the local basque school after Easter. They have to be inclusive of non-native speakers and are trying to help him fit into the more regimented schedule of a state school.
