What kind of cake can I make for 1st b-day?

DS will be one on Tuesday, and he's just really getting the swing of solid foods. He didn't even start sitting up until 7 months, so we really took our time introducing solids. We want to make a cake for him (even though it will mostly be for us), but with all the food allergy crud to worry about, I'm not sure what kind of recipe to use. He's never had eggs, though I think yolks are okay now (I've just been too lazy to separate eggs to give him yolks), but whites are not. Chocolate is out. He's had cheese, but never straight cow's milk. Theoretically cow's milk should be okay as of year one, so I could use that for baking, right? Or would it be better to use yogurt or kefir? And, I don't want to make it very sweet, since he's never really had anything sweetened with sugar, and of course he's never had honey (except for one slip-up a couple months ago).

Anyone have any good recipes or ideas? I'm guessing most parents just ignore all this stuff and give their kids whatever. Am I making too big a deal?

Also, if it makes a difference, the eggs we would use would be from our chickens, and the milk would be raw cow's milk (no longer raw after baking it, of course).

hmm... when I think of something a little sweet i think pineapple upside down cake! No frosting needed!

We didn't do a cake for DS at all for his first birthday. He was barely eating solids. Our families gave us a hard time but I stood firm--he didn't need one and I can't imagine how it would have upset his stomach. Personally I think the whole first birthday cake pictures, etc. is silly. Babies don't need sugar and flour.

I think I made lower-sugar carrot cake mini-cupcakes for dd's first birthday (followed a martha stewart recipe for the most part). I had looked around at other applesauce cakes that were lower sugar too, and banana ones. It had just a drop of frosting that was cream cheese with a touch of milk and maple syrup (and 'fancy' candied carrots on top, those were pretty fun).

I did consider doing something with just fruit and yogurt that looked like a cake (say, an apricot half with yogurt dolloped in the middle and some berries around it with a candle stuck in), so if you still really want to avoid things you haven't given babe yet something like that would still be pretty festive.

I've made cake for both my kids' first b-days, but they didn't get any. Too much sugar/new foods, etc.

What about a fruit plate, with lots of color and maybe one new fruit?

you could try some of the raw kitchen recipes if you want a healthy cake.
im not home right now, ill try to look up my resources when i get back home,
but for example i made a pumpkin pie for thanksgiving that didnt actually have any pumpkin in it, it was very vibrant and delicious and the crust was made of dates and alonds. i ve also made a key lime pie, with the same crust and avocados, limes and coconut for the filling. i am sure there is something you can find that is suitable for bday

It's not like he's going to eat the whole thing, it's really just for me and DH and some friends. I just wanted to be able to give him a little taste, since we usually do that with all our meals. I like the ideas you've all given though. I might just make him some fruit and yogurt or something and make a regular cake for us adults. Thanks!

My son has allergy to soy, egg, and milk on his 1st bday. I made him a blueberry pie, as he loved blueberries and they are low allergenic as they are in the cranberry family, not the berry family.

The crust was homemade with canola oil, flour, sugar mainly. Store bought ones all had soy in them and were made with hydrogenated oils which I am not a fan of. The filling was blueberries, some sugar and some lemon juice I think. DELICIOUS! You could use a grahm cracker crust in little pie tins and give one to everyone if you want.

Egg whites are HIGHLY allergenic for my lo, and since you can never be sure you get all the white off the yolk, we opt to not give him either whites or yolks.

He loved the pie, and so did everyone else, we stuck a #1 candle it in and took pictures, it was wonderful!!!

I think peanut butter chocolate would be perfect.. When I made it for my first DD's birthday it turned out that to get a lot of appreciations..

I was doing this same search about a year ago. I was so worried about giving him a bit of cake, since he hadn't had any sweets yet. I ran out of time so ended up getting Dr. Oetker cake mix, but made my own cream cheese frosting (Heavy cream, cream cheese and a bit of sugar, maple syrup, agave nectar). I put some pomegranite raspberry preserves in the middle and blueberries (ds's fav) and raspberries on top.

I gave him a tiny little sliver...the result? He picked through the frosting to get all of the berries! Ha! LOVE MY KID!

I believe your dd's first b-day is the most important, but as for the cake, I came across this website with this blog and found it interesting!! Check it out!!
