Big giant hugs, mama!

I don't have a copy of Hale, but it is generally recommended that women pump and dump for 72 hours when undergoing medical abortion. I think there just isn't much data about it.

Having had a miscarriage aided by cytotec and a miscarriage completed by D & C, and also having worked in abortion clinics for many years, I don't know that a medical abortion truly is more natural. If you are much past 8 weeks, I have seen lots of failed medical abortions that ended up as surgical procedures anyway. There is also a longer period of uncertainty, while you wait for things to get going. Not trying to talk you out of a medical abortion, but if you are really concerned that not nursing for a few days could hurt you bf relationships, it is something to think about.

I hope you have lots of IRL support, no matter what you decide. Whether or not you continue the pregnancy, you are going to have some shifting hormones and lots of emotions. You deserve support! If you call your local Planned Parenthood, they can refer you to counselors who specialize in pregnancy issues (this is true even if you decide to continue the pg).

Thank you both. I received info in in the Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy board that both medications are not contraindicated with breastfeeding.

I had a medical termination and still ended up needing a DNC. I also had a surgical termination while breastfeeding and as long as you tell them that you are breastfeeding they can give you appropriate meds.

I am sorry this is happening to you. I completely understand how hard such a decision can be.

My experience working with women having medical abortions is from a decade ago. I probably shouldn't make generalizations. It is true that the further you are, the higher the rates of incomplete abortion requiring surgery. If you decide to terminate, you will most likely have an u/s to verify dates. Then I would ask the clinic where you go about specific rates of incomplete abortion in relation to gestation. You could even ask that in advance.

I think my response was just because of the mention that medical abortion seems more natural. That isn't my perception of the experience. I think this is highly individual though, and I know some people are very satisfied with the decision to use medication and avoid surgery. I have been through a D&C myself and have been with many, many women during surgical abortions, and in reality, it is very fast and the physical recovery is usually pretty straightforward. My use of medication (which was different since I only used misoprostol) ended with me having to go to the emergency room for bleeding. It felt much more invasive in the end than just having the surgery.

I just wanted to explain my bias.

Take care and continued good vibes.

I had a vacuum aspiration abortion at 8 weeks while I was nursing my oldest son (he was 15 mos. at the time). I chose it over medical because I was nursing and didn't want to pump and dump.

I am in the same boat right now. I have a 17 month old nursling and I am accidentally pregnant right now. Trying to make the same decision. Just wanted to offer and say you are not alone. Sorry anyone has to go through this...

Could you have the baby and put him/her up for adoption?
You've apparently done the nursing through pregnancy before, your body could probably handle nursing while pregnant.

Do you feel like sharing an update?

Hugs.

I looked into terminating and discovered it seemed safe to nurse (a toddler anyway) after either the medical or surgical option. I ended up miscarrying anyway (different m/c than the one in my siggy), so I never had to go through it, but I very much empathize with you.

I'm thinking of you.
