Toddler will sleep for baba but not for mom

Our son is 25 months old. Until a few months ago, I was nursing him to sleep. We then transitioned to nursing and putting him in his crib awake. I would stay by his crib until he fell asleep. Sometimes this takes up to an hour.

A few weeks ago, his other mother (who he calls baba) took over bedtime for me when I was sick. They rocked together and sang songs. Then she put him in his crib, rubbed his back and talked for a few minutes, said goodnight and then left the room. He was fine! He sang himself a few songs and then zonked out. The next night we tried it again - same thing!

I thought perhaps it I could do the same thing, but no. If *I* rock him and try to leave after I put him in his crib he loses it. We've been taking turns now every other night and it's the same thing. With her, he's fine putting himself to sleep. With me, he cries.

What's up with this? And is there anyway I can get him to go down so nicely with me? (without CIO of course.)

He is probably associating you with nursing. My kids can ALWAYS fall right asleep for my DH. But will ONLY nurse to sleep for me. And most of the time I have to be rocking and nursing. Maybe just allow baba to put him to sleep for a few nights and see if that helps, if you want him to fall asleep on his own.

Thanks jnet42! It's good to know that your kids go down easier for your partner as well.

I think the thing that's throwing me is that he doesn't nurse to sleep anymore with me. We nurse and rock and then I put him in his crib. He's fine with that for me. He just doesn't want me to leave the room. With his baba, she can just say goodnight and leave!
