ALWAYS leave the door to the washer open when it's not in use. You will not get a smell.

Also, if you follow the manufacturer's instructions (on my LG anyway) you are supposed to empty out the water thing on the bottom at LEAST twice a month. You know, the little door thing? Drain the water out of it and then clean the lint trap at LEAST every two weeks. You shouldn't have a smell then.

Have you tried bleach? I know it's a no-no, but using one bottle of bleach would be much less harmful to the environment than buying a whole new machine (not to mention cheaper)!

If you have a clean machine cycle I would run that with the recommended amount of bleach and then for every cycle thereafter I would add 2 TBSP of bleach, even the dark loads. Put in the bleach dispenser and then add water up to the fill line, this will help prevent bleach spots on clothes. 2 TBSP, IME, is not enough to bleach or fade your clothes, but it will get the smell out of your clothes and prevent whatever is growing in your machine from growing back. I would do this until your machine no longer smells.

Alternatively, you could wash every load on hot with a scoop of oxi-clean until the smell is gone. IME though, oxi-clean makes cotton quite rough and is harder on fabric than a small amount of bleach.

Good luck!

I have a Bosch Nexxt, and for the first 2 years I had the washer, I never had smell issues. For the last year or so, it's been smelly. I ALWAYS leave the door open, I use bleach occasionally, and I keep the gasket wiped down. I've found that the smell usually has to do with some sort of water that sits in the washer between cycles. The other thing I've noticed is that using liquid detergent makes the smell SO much worse.

When I strip the washer by running multiple cycles with Cascade Plus dishwashing detergent (it's supposed to help by disolving enzymes, or something like that), it is much less smelly. It is truly gross to see all of the crap that comes out of the washer after running cycles of Cascade.

Does your front load washer have smell issues? we did in the past
Brand LG
Model Not sure
Does it heat its own water? not sure
How long you have had it? About 4 years
Where you are located? Florida
Type of climate? usually hot and humid

We had a lot of problems with our front loader being smelly when we first got it. I try to wipe out the rubber gasket between loads, run an empty bleach cycle periodically. What has worked the absolute best for us was switching to the new Purex combo detergant/fabric softener sheets.

I think that using too much detergent or fabric softner leads to buildup around the drum and that causes the mildew smell. Using the Purex sheets prevents us from using too much detergent. Also I add an extra rinse cycle for heavy loads and that seems to help too.

Does your front load washer have smell issues? Yes
Brand Bosch
Model nexxt 500 series
Does it heat its own water? I think so
How long you have had it? ~2 years
Where you are located? Delaware
Type of climate? cold winter, hot in summer

We are moving soon and I don't think I want another front loader. I am very disappointed in mine. It saves water and that's about it. It doesn't get clothes as clean as a top loader and is always smelly. I do leave the door open. I end up using extra water by re-washing clothes and cleaning the washer, so what's the difference? I also never had so much maintenance with any front loaders. Like making sure door is laeft open and cleaning mildew and funk out of the gasket and what-not. It leaks a little from the door too and I cannot get it sable on my cement basement floor so it is always off balance. I'll be glad to be done with it! Oh, we have very hard water too, so that doesn't help matters.
