Overload on princess stuff for 8th bday

My mom asked me last week what dd might want for her birthday on the 12th. The only thing dd has been talking about is a detective kit as she loving Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys books at the moment. I passed on that idea to mom. We just got her present in the mail today and it's a box full of disney princess stuff. I am not totally against the princess theme and have liked the way disney has just recently attempted to make them stronger and more independent. A box full of this stuff is about to make me gag though. It was a really great job actually listening to what the child wanted for her birthday too We've had some issues with gender stereo typing from my parents before, but this driving me crazy.

Its a gift for your daughter allow her to decide. I personally can't think of a disney dress up kit that would FIT my DD who is 7 years old though...

I agree w/letting your DD decide if she wants to keep it all. It's her gift, afterall. She may like it all just b/c it came from grandma . That said, my DD is 8 and has been over princesses for years now, so I know she would likely want to pass on at least most of it to someone younger. I'm surprised you've gotten this far w/o her having a ton of princess stuff at some point, though.

Has your DD opened it yet? What did she think?

My MIL has done similar things, not taking any suggestions about gifts. Sometimes what she got was a pretty big hit. Of course, now she doesn't even bother to send anything for birthdays or Christmas so it's not a problem anymore.

It's not dress up stuff that wouldn't have fit her at 4 years old. It's just everything in the package was disney princesses themed. It's books, crayons a keepsake diary kit of some sort and some rings that won't fit her hands. She has not looked at any of it yet and I will let her have it as it's from grandma. What was the point in asking what she wanted if that wasn't taken in to consideration at all is my biggest peeve. She has had princess things in the past although we have managed to keep them to a minimum. Simply not having money to buy tons of things helps with not being overloaded with things like that.

I know, it's funny right. Of course, a gift is a gift, but I do think it's strange that relatives sometimes ask suggestions and then ignore them all.
